Acros the right stuff for the night, regarding LIRF

Another approach is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_hypersensitization

Re: Moon lit scene with Txp 320

If you cannot spotmeter well the night scene then we have a solution (modern times): use a DSLR and make several test shots (or your smartphone with special apps), when you have the right exposure...
  3. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

No. I claim 3.38D with multi-exposure, which is a value that to me it's pretty fair for the V700. This is all that I've been claiming all these years.

But I discovered last week that now...
  4. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Sandy, my shots don't deserve a drum scan, but I've processed several hundreds of 35mm velvia frames (of two artists exhibiting internationally) that were scanned with X5, Imacons and drums. I had to...
  5. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Sandy, I totally agree, that graph plotting Epson performance vs film height is many years old, and ANR and wet mounting solutions have also been there for many, many years.

    But Aztek and...
  6. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

We may review a posted side by side made by member Steve Ruttenberg, he purchased a drum after the V850, we may beg his permission to compare his crops after a simple but a bit more refined edition....
  7. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Sandy, there are many tests but none much useful for us. Let me explain why I insist.

The Collaborative Scanner test was made in C-41 color film, but most of us do mainly BW for LF, and there...
  8. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Sandy, let me make a direct interpelation and a proposition:

    Interpelation:

This pixel-peeping is smashing evidence that for color negative film the Epson performs excatly the same than a...

  10. Re: How much detail is lost enlarging a 4x5 negative to 8X10

Many times those lenses come from machine vision systems, usually from linear cameras for continuous inspection.

The magnagon (the same? close match?) is said to have constant performance in the...
  11. Re: How much detail is lost enlarging a 4x5 negative to 8X10

:) just seen it... quite epoxi on it...

Not repaired by HP, I guess...

But if would be the right lens for that job, isn't it ?

  13. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

M-E takes at least twice the time as two scans are made in two passes. Some Pro scanners may be making the two exposures in a single pass, taking two shots before davancing the carriage or the film....
  14. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Ok, no more circles, let's draw my conclusions for "Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount"

For Color negative film we have smashing evidence:...
  15. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

    The thing is quite clear.

The X5 always resolves at contrast extintion the same amount of pixels in the scan width, around 6900, the more inches the scan width has the less pixels per inch...
  16. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Silverfast Negafix advantage is that it has specific maps for each film, accounting for the C-41 <--> RA-4 specific spectral interaction, an inversion not considering the specific film may require a...

At least since 2006, color conversion is also the reason why many people like the Epson flatbeds, like Nick Carver explains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9d8BukUgzI min 22:00

  19. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Yes, but with the drum we have to scan at 8.000dpi hardware, is we scan at 4000dpi then true resolved power (at contrast extintion) may be in the 3400 to 3600 range, and this is not much an...
  20. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

With the Epson without stitching... it's only about nailing flatness/focus.

The X5 resolves 2600 effective with 3000 scans, so 0% MTF at 2600, quite a surprisingly low value for such an expensive...
  21. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Lachlan, those have to be scans of MF film, as for 4x5" LF max hardware resolution of the X5 is 2,040dpi. As this is a LF forum it would also be interesting if you can also post 4x5" scans, to see...

  24. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

The Epson V700 scans perfectly CN and BW film +6 overexposed, which delivers densities under 3.0D.

This is the signal-noise vs density of the V700 before using Multi-Exposure.

  25. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Well, the Flextight makes 6900 dpi effective for 35mm film, this is an insane amount, and it makes +4.0D for Velvia... this is its sweet point, as the format gets large it shines less.

    I've no...
  26. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

    Let me say my view.

Tecnically, at 6400dpi you get a 25% higher resolving power than at 2400, diminishing returns, but for sure there is a performace increase. Of course to notice it the LF shot...

This is easily adjusted with Photoshop edition:
