Re: New Zealand, S Island, west coast

What Vaughn said. One sand fly bite will make you miserable for 3 days. Take bug spray. Any time you are near water, spray it on....a lot....and then some more. You will thank us for this. But...

Not only can, it does. My first intro to them was in Arthurs Pass where they proceeded to eat my rental car. Well, OK, they ate my weather stripping and wiper blades (called "rubbers" by the...

    Re: Yosemite Historic Names RESTORED!

If I had an inventory of the shirts, it would have sold out in a heartbeat. One elderly lady sitting in the Ahwahnee Meadow looked at the shirt and said, "Oh, bless you."

    Re: Yosemite Historic Names RESTORED!

Right after the name change, I had a sweatshirt printed with "It's the Ahwahnee, Stupid" and wore it all around and inside the hotel. The manager was none too pleased, but couldn't do anything about...

    Re: Yosemite again!

Was there last month with 100 trash bags thinking I'd help with clean up. I wasn't needed. Someone arranged a crew of volunteers the week before. Never saw the valley so clean. All that I picked...
  7. Re: International Air Travel Overhead Bin Size/Weight?

I've heard, but can't confirm, that in addition to the size limits, Qantas is picky about the posted weight limit as well.

Re: New Zealand North Island in late FEB 2018

If there were any possibility, I would grab a flight to Rotorua and spend all my time around all the geothermal areas.

Second that on the bug spray.

    3 months would be better.
  13. Re: Honeymoon - Leaning Toward Argentina or NZ (Early February)

Take the Chamonix and both lenses at the very least. You will need them. Tripod, yes, of course. And several books for Emily.
  14. Re: Honeymoon - Leaning Toward Argentina or NZ (Early February)

If you would prefer 2 weeks only, then keep to the South Island. If you want some details, especially where tourists don't go, email me. Been there 11 times.

Re: Hole in the Rock in October?

Definitely Capitol Reef. That time of year, you should pretty much have the park to yourself.
  17. Re: Honeymoon - Leaning Toward Argentina or NZ (Early February)

I never encountered the little bastards except right around water (Lots of that in NZ.) So at least I knew where to expect them, which meant every time I shot a waterfall (Lots of those in NZ).
  18. Re: Honeymoon - Leaning Toward Argentina or NZ (Early February)

Sandflies are never a problem with the simple expedient of DEET. Been there, done that. Eleven times.

    Re: Mariposa Alert!

There is one ironic benefit to this smoke invasion. I encountered it a few years ago when the fire was to the east of the valley. Yes, it made photographing the iconic shots a no-go. But early...

Re: Colorado Springs area in July

You can spend a whole day at G of the G, starting at dawn as it hits the red rock. The aspens are probably bare of their leaves, but you can always shoot the trunks by heading up the drive to Pikes...

Re: shooting in winter (in New England)

Of course, here in South Calif. when the weather gets really, really nasty, I throw a fleece vest over my t-shirt and we're good to go....unless I'm heading for Yosemite over MLK.
