    Re: 8x10 Camera Musing

I do like the idea of an 8x10 with just a 300mm rail - at least for the focal lengths I prefer.

    Re: Uva alt print box

On the matter of safety, I've seen high power UV units wired so that you have to be out of the room & the door locked or (on smaller units like yours) there are baffles with microswitches on them...
  3. Re: De Vere 5108, negative carrier and timer questions

It'll depend on the switching capacity of the timer's relay as to what else is going on inside the enlarger control box - the pin-out of the timer socket is identical across the entire range - it's...
  4. Re: De Vere 5108, negative carrier and timer questions

The 5108 wiring is different from the smaller De Vere's because the 1200w dichroic head uses 4x ELH bulbs, wired in parallel in the US versions, mixed series/ parallel in the UK/ EUR versions to the...
  5. Re: De Vere 5108, negative carrier and timer questions

This is the plug De Vere use, as far as I know.

Regarding the carrier, the De Vere one is essentially two metal plates with nylon springs (not even really hinges) & clips for the glass - not...

    Re: Linhof Ball-Head Mystery...

Fixed them. For whatever reason they're surprisingly easy codes to get wrong compared to Durst/ Leitz/ De Vere.

    Re: Linhof Ball-Head Mystery...

Bob - the current equivalent would be the 003323 plus 003755, and yes, the example I had in my hands was very stable, but the series 5 Gitzo was that bit 'deader', much like the column of De Vere...

    Re: Linhof Ball-Head Mystery...

The Heavy Duty Pro (390R is the code I think) tripod is a huge piece of kit - had the opportunity to A/B a vintage example directly against an old Gitzo aluminium Series 5 tripod a few months ago....

    Re: Linhof Ball-Head Mystery...

Linhof made an even better levelling head, with a milled bearing surface for extremely solid lockdown - the base diameter is about that of a #5 Gitzo top plate. Its smaller brother is in the centre...

Re: Glass for enlargers or cameras

Kienzle in Germany can cut glass of both sorts for enlarger carriers.
  11. Re: Flextight holder that allows full frame scanning of 4x5 negative?

Very definitely agree! Though I've often used the 120 holder shift-and-stitch style to get 3200ppi scans of 9x12cm film - relatively painless - the speed of the X5 definitely helps.
  12. Re: Flextight holder that allows full frame scanning of 4x5 negative?

If I've had to do it, I've resorted to shift and stitch from 4 scans - but there's plenty material for the holder to hang on to while still giving adequate rebate. Can't say I've had a 4x5 neg escape...
  13. Re: Oversize film holders for Imacon / Hasselblad Flextight scanners

I think the 5x7 holder has a 12x17cm aperture - and the reflective holder is for up to about A4, so 29.7cm long - so if 4.7x11.7" is acceptable, you might be able to get away with it. No guarantees...
  14. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Unfortunately it'll carry on for exactly as long as the mods are prepared to tolerate a sealion horking up nonsense.
  15. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Pere, you are quite clearly behaving as you are because you are afraid of being seen to not be as smart or as experienced as you think you are.

If you were less fearful of being wrong about the...
  16. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Same thoughts here as well - thanks for expressing them so concisely and clearly.
  17. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Agreed - there's certainly a profound lack of knowledge on display about how unpleasantly the (badly) sharpened Epson image will print.
  18. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Goes with the territory, 'fraid to say. No matter what gamma etc you use when you scan it, the file off an Epson with the histogram maxed is noticeably flatter than a scan off a high end scanner,...

    Re: Intrepid 8x10 experiences?

I don't think the ply is coated/ finished/ marine grade on the Intrepids & it often doesn't take much to get that sort of material to change shape.

Sounds like it might be cheaper overall to get...

    Re: Intrepid 8x10 experiences?

That all-too-easy-to-move front standard was one of the two things that's been putting me off buying an Intrepid 8x10 so far - good to hear that it's solvable with something that adds minimal...
  21. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

    Same bafflement here.

The principles are pretty simple, if you take an average f22, normal lens, 4x5 T-Max 100 system which equates to about 25 cyc/mm resolved at MTF50 at the image centre (from...

Re: Turner Reich Triple Conv. date..

I could be wrong, but some quick research suggests Burke and James bought Gundlach in the early 50's, re-named them Dynamic Optics Inc., which became D.O.Industries in the early '70's. Given this...
  23. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

No Pere, try again. Use the crop of the barn wall. That is the bit that will be far more obvious in terms of perceptual sharpness/ definition relative to noise/ granularity in a print. Otherwise you...
  24. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

So Pere, when are you going to show everyone that the low contrast detail resolution of the Epson can be matched to the Howtek? You've reached the end of your excuses highway.

    Show the evidence....

Re: Ilford Multigrade 500H Fan Issue

They're not too hard to fault-find on - if you are comfortable with following a schematic, have relevant tools, meters etc. Plugs and sockets tend to be the major failure points on MG500 heads...
  26. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

Cheers Peter, it's pretty obvious that the Howtek (and any high end scanner really) severely outperforms the Epson where it's going to matter visually in a print at pretty much any size, especially...
  27. Re: Howtek 8000 Drum vs. Epson V850 flatbed scanners

It's very striking that no one has attempted to do anything with the section of image showing the planks - which along with the larger areas of smooth tonality is where most viewers will really see...

Re: Affordable 8x10: Any Other Game than Intrepid?

From what I've been able to track down, they seem pretty solid and simple, made with decent quality parts. Built for use, not display.

    I recall there's about a year or so wait - I had...
  29. Re: Anyone Made RA-4 Color Prints From Ektar Negatives?

The only scan specific changes were to the supercoating layers. Ektar is intended to deliver a print result closer to the look of transparency film - and that makes some of its behaviour rather...
  30. Re: 120mm WA-Rodagon optical performance at low magnifications?

I have done so - will update this thread when I get a response.
  31. Re: 120mm WA-Rodagon optical performance at low magnifications?

The reason I wanted to know is because Schneider's Apo Componon HM 120/5.6 is supposed to be able to handle down to 1:1 and up to about the same enlargement as the WA-Rodagon - and while I suspect it...
  32. 120mm WA-Rodagon optical performance at low magnifications?

What are the nominal optical deficiencies that led Rodenstock to not recommend the 120mm WA-Rodagon for enlargements under 4x? Are they likely to be visually significant in normal use?
  33. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Pere, it matters relatively little what you used for the negative for that scan, at that resolution it should have some visible, clean, crisp granularity, not whatever odd, soft, aliased horrors are...
  34. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

That's about the sum of it.
  35. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Well, here's one from a Hasselblad X5 and HP5+ at (top to bottom) 3000ppi, 2040ppi and 1500ppi. They are all 100% crops of native resolution...
  36. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Very much so, especially with those who want to prove how 'clever' their cheapness and rampantly amateurish approach is. The total lack of even the most passing engagement with the tenets of...
  37. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

All you've demonstrated is a total lack of knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the internals of the Imacon design. And that vague multiplications of a supposed scan of a film copy of a chrome on...
  38. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Pere, I'm not interested in listening to you repeating the same tired (and self-evidently untested) statements over and over and over - just accept the following: you can get 3000ppi scans from...
  39. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

If you'd rather contribute TMY-II scans, that's fine as well - I'd prefer people use what they are comfortable with, because they'll generally get the best results they can achieve with their setup,...
  40. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

While some CMOS based imaging systems are coming down in price, an Epson isn't a bad option if you aren't making big prints and have fairly relaxed aim points (qualitatively speaking).

    The...
