Re: Still life - background choice

Depends on the subject matter. Could be a textured surface, flat, colored, draped. Something totally out of focus and abstract or suggesting an environment. Really, whatever makes you happy. Look at...

Re: Why Not Movie Film Filters?

I can see from the Schneider examples where one would want to use the weaker filters to soften the digital curse. But the stronger ones just look dated and bad to me.

    Re: Digital Prints - Horrors

I like Canson Baryta Photographique. It has a satin finish and gives bright color without being overly glossy. Epson just launched some new fine art papers and they should be able to supply you with...

    Re: Digital Prints - Horrors

it sounds to me like your choice of paper is the cause of the disappointing prints. Can you have samples printed on various stocks to be able to compare the color? It does not have to be full-size or...

    Re: Insurance Questions

Some camera manufacturers have you register your equipment with them. Today, with that being online and accessible, I would think that might be an ideal way to prove ownership.

Lenders do mandate fire and flood insurance. And you go on and on about the cost of earthquake insurance. It's not cheap, but not as outrageous as you seem to make it out to be....

So, the cost of replacing all your windows would less than the cost of earthquake insurance? Maybe over a few years, but the next big earthquake could be today. The whole idea of having earthquake...

Have you priced earthquake insurance? You must live in a house with very few, single-glaze windows. Yes, the deductibles are quite high and, like flood insurance, there is only one underwriter, the...

  21. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

But is a discussion finished when it goes so far off on a tangent? And how does the medium (the internet) affect how you appreciate the validity of said discussion and conclusion?

  24. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

A good photograph or piece of art should transcend the medium. All the art books I studied in school had at best mediocre reproductions of paintings, but one got the point nevertheless.

  27. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

Yes, but in response to the original title of this thread, the choice of medium doesn't affect my opinion of it (and the thread specifies photography, not painting, sculpture, etc). It is the final...
  28. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

  29. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

  30. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

Sometimes the medium provides challenges and satisfaction that are unique. It is the experience of making the photograph and final print that is part of why I photograph.
  31. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?
