Re: Eliot Porter exhibit in Maine

Thanks for the notice JP. I hope that I’ll be able to get to see this. It’s so impressive to see the dye transfers in person.

  3. Re: Use of X-ray film: technical discussion with example images

    Thank you Peter.
  4. Re: Use of X-ray film: technical discussion with example images

I just got some 8x10 Carestream Ektascan that I’m planning to try with Pyrocat HD, water stop and TF-4 fixer. Do I need three flat bottomed trays or just the first one for the developer?
    Thanks,...

What Bob said. Maybe try a smaller lens, like a 150 or 135?

    Re: Flowers Anyone?

I came across some Acros quickloads that I had never developed, from 2011. So I developed them today, to use up the last of some Pyrocat HD Part B, before mixing up a fresh batch. The negatives are...
  7. Re: Large Format Camera - Focusing architecture (in a hangar)

Until someone more knowledgeable replies, I would say you should trust what you see on the ground glass. You might want to bring in a strong flashlight, if you are allowed, to help you get...

Another nice one Austin. This is from a trip to the Storm King Art Center last fall.

Beautiful tones in this one Austin. Thanks for posting.
  11. Re: Pre-soak for manual 4x5 B&W development in a Jobo tank?

FWIW I do pre-soak for regular inversion in a JOBO tank. I use Pyrocat HD.
  12. Re: Keeping paper (exposure sheets, notes) with negatives - bad for archiving?

I use a separate small notebook for my exposure details, with the scenes and holder numbers. I write the processing information in the notebook as well, and on the Printfile sheet with a Sharpie...

Re: The Setup and the Shot

Nice image, and I’m impressed! I would never be able to haul my Deardorff up the mountain. My hikes on Greylock now include only a MF camera, and I often don’t go to the summit. Let me know if...

    Re: 8x10 tray processing

I’ve done two sheets at a time in one liter of working solution with Pyrocat HD and D76. I would think you could do a second sheet after the first if you didn’t wait too long.

Re: Keeping Time tray developing film

I used an Ironman digital watch timer in my pants pocket set to beep every minute, when I developed in a dark bathroom tub.

Thanks Jason. I always enjoy your Rollei work, and this spruce image is beautiful.

It’s very hard to follow Reinhold and Austin! I’ll take one for the team. This is taken with a Mamiya 7 on TMY in Pyrocat HD. https://i.imgur.com/Zy7RvF8.jpg
  19. Re: Seeking Ideas For Simple 8x10 Contact Printing Solution

The light bulb hanging doesn’t need to be permanent. Just put a hook in the ceiling and bring in the lightbulb on a wire when you print. It’s handy to have it plugged into a timer. This works...

Re: What did you compose at Waters Edge?

Yes they are hemlocks Joe, and some White pine trunks behind. So far the hemlocks in this area (northwest corner of MA) seem okay, but it may just be a matter of time.

Re: What did you compose at Waters Edge?

I took this in April and just got around to developing it today. Wisner 4x5 camera, 210 mm lens, FP4 in Pyrocat HD in trays. My scanner is dirty, so I’m sure I missed some spots. I cropped from the...
  22. Re: Camera confusion: Beginner Puzzles over Chamonix et al

As others have suggested, why don’t you spend some time with the camera you have, and learn what it can do, before worrying about your next camera? At the start it’s good to be close to home, or...

Thanks for posting this Stephen. I’m very glad that you, and others, are making this effort. I may try to give it a shot, although I’m not sure I have the technical skills....

  24. Re: Too late, too expensive for this year, but maybe the next? Little Italy and Autum

Just FYI, I was just in northern NH, where it was peak foliage over the weekend, i.e., the last weekend of September. Driving back yesterday it was peak foliage in the Green Mountains of Vermont. ...
  25. Re: First Post! - How Do I Measure My Bellows Extension To Calculate Bellows Exposure

I do what Doremus does. I have tables for my most used lenses. Recently I found myself using a 125mm lens instead of the 135mm in my notebook, and just took an educated guess, and it worked out...
  26. Re: 8x10 Development in tray - How to know the time

I transfer the negative(s) to a filled 11x14 tray under a tap dribbling fresh water in slowly. I dump the whole tray and refill a couple of times, while I do other clean up, for about 15 minutes...

  34. Re: Contact printing “how-to” but as a final product, not a proof.

The better the negative the better the print. If you’re not happy with the print, start by taking more care exposing and developing your negative.

Re: 4x5 to 8x10 increasing back?

The bellows would vignette the larger image area, for example. A 5x7 reducing back on an 8x10 camera would be quite nice, but not vice versa!
