    Re: Barrel lens

I own about a dozen, all from the 19th Century. About the only advantage I can think of is they are cheaper. I use them to shoot wet plate so lack of a shutter is not a big deal.

Normal here except there won't be the big Christmas concert at the Cathedral. I'm bummed about that--I go every year. Oh well.

Virtually impossible to ID the lenses. There were a lot of makers. The camera looks English.

That usually means either you didn't develop long enough or didn't rinse well enough after developing. I rinse mine until the water runs clear.

    Ancient Dry Plates

There are many older 5x7 cameras out there. They are not only solid but also beautiful. Main drawback to 5x7 is lack of color film.

  14. Re: Can anyone recommend a sturdy tall carbon fiber tripod and ball head/pan-tilt hea

Look for a used Gitzo 1325. It will do what you want and used ones are a helluva of a value. I ve had one since 2006. It's never failed and even holds my Kodak 2d 8x10 in a pinch.

  17. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

I never use a UV filter and have never had a lens damaged in 40 years. I am an outdoor photographer and photo in all the conditions the Northern Plains can dish out. I do use lens caps routinely.

    Re: Tripods in lightning storms?

Doubtful it makes much difference. Air is a good insulator and ligthtning goes through thousands of feet of it.

  22. Re: Disasterous Consequences

WOW! Never would have guessed that but looking at the images that looks correct. The rear bell of the lens was shading the negative.

  23. Re: Disasterous Consequences

It's a good wide angle lens. Note the gap between the rear of the shutter and the lens board. I'm suspecting there is a light leak around the shutter as Jody suggested.

It's similar to wet plate, depending on the skill of the person doing it. I store glass negatives with a piece of glassine between them.

The duration of the flash is something like 1//500s to 1/1000s so shutter speed only matters if you want ambient light to appear.
