I suspect you know as much as anyone needs on the technical end.

One approach I recommend would be to make a project for yourself: Compile and share what you consider the finest b&w portraits...

  9. Re: Portraits: Fujinon SFS lenses vs. Fujinon 240 A + Soft Focus filter

Could you point to an area where you see this harsh softness please ? Are you talking about the lack of halos ?
  10. Re: Portraits: Fujinon SFS lenses vs. Fujinon 240 A + Soft Focus filter

I forgot to mention: as with ordinary lenses, we often find differences in rendition before - versus behind - the plane of focus. Each lens can be many lenses, depending on all the factors.

  11. Re: Portraits: Fujinon SFS lenses vs. Fujinon 240 A + Soft Focus filter

Every model exhibits its own distinct combination of under- and over-corrected lens aberrations, which vary with aperture, focus distance, sensor size, view camera movements and lighting. You can't...

    Thank you very much.

No view camera or even a tripod was possible when shooting, but I've tried correcting the verticals to no avail. Does the image look peculiar or distracting, in that regard ?

I have revised my article Selective Toning with Photoshop

None of the methods appear to be straightforward.

  22. Re: A brief article on digital image "toning": Advanced Color Fill Method in Photosho

That works very well, and it's very quick since you can apply the Blend If directly to the Fill Layer... Brilliant !

Here I've applied some toning that is strongest around 35% brightness, rolling...
  23. Re: A brief article on digital image "toning": Advanced Color Fill Method in Photosho

The Blend If method is a bit harder to grasp, but it doesn't suffer from a problem I've noticed using Curves, namely colors getting inverted. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature. I suspect...

I see your excellent point. Is this what you're talking about ?

  25. Re: A brief article on digital image "toning": Advanced Color Fill Method in Photosho

As far as I know, the Blend If feature gives us discontinuous transitions. Using a curve instead of a strict cutoff, we get a blended effect where one tone gradually transitions into the next. The...
  26. Re: A brief article on digital image "toning": Advanced Color Fill Method in Photosho

We can choose from all colors and apply as many layers as we like. Tritones, Quadtones, etc. can be blended with no apparent gaps or discontinuities unless we want them.

    This is not my artistic...
