  1. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

Yes, my monitor (Dell 27") is calibrated/profiled, with a XRite i1 Studio. It is noticeably warmer than the light panel - I shall have to think about that!
Thanks for the suggestion about exposure...
  2. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

For the highest quality I would look to a different scanning method. The Kaiser light panel is relatively cheap, and I can tell neither the image brightness nor the colour are precisely even across...
  3. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I can set the kelvin temperature. I have set it to 5000K, but as I'm shooting in raw I can adjust the white balance in Lightroom anyway.
  4. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I mask the film sheets with a piece of card with a rectangular cut-out, painted matt black. This keeps out all extraneous light from the panel.
After an embarrassing experience of uneven brightness...
  5. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I have made some progress, attributable to correcting some user error and understanding some machine error.

First, I realised that the Kaiser light panel rechargeable battery was running down;...
  6. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

The Leica SL 24-90 zoom is pretty good, but yes, I will try the Leica R 100mm to see what difference it makes.
  7. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I don't. I can frame and focus on the whole of a 4x5 sheet with the lens I have (Leica 24-90 zoom lens), so I shouldn't need a macro lens. I have been scanning 35mm (B&W) with a 100mm macro lens.
  8. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I shall try this. I have set WB in camera to 5000K, which is what the Kaiser light panel is supposed to be, but I agree I should check it. Thank you.
  9. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I'm not sure what you mean by your first line. I like the colours and tonality in the original transparency, and I would like to reproduce them in a digital version. I haven't found a way to do that...
  10. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

Because the colours I see in the transparency on the light table are much more appealing to this viewer than I have achieved so far in Lightroom.
  11. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

Thank you - yes, I was using the wrong term - I want to make a camera profile for Lightroom (#.dcp file), which I have done before with a ColorChecker Passport and Xrite software. I have not yet...
  12. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

Thank you, Alan - that's considerably better than my scans after processing
  13. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

Thanks, Neil - I will investigate this approach and see what's available here.
  14. Re: Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I am using the Kaiser Slimlight Piano. I haven't had particular problems with colour negatives.
    It is specified as:
    Light source: 23 LEDs, 5000 Kelvin, CRI=95
    Luminous density: approx. 750 cd/mē
  15. Scanning Provia/transparencies with a digital camera: ICC profiling?

I have shot 20 4x5 sheets of Provia 100F, scanned them with a digital camera, and imported them to Lightroom with the Adobe Standard profile.
The digital results are a bit disappointing in terms of...

Re: New arrival: Chroma Carbon Adventurer

Just taken it out to take a first shot, of a rusty burnt out car on wasteland, so I took the Nikkor SE 90 5.6, with the bag bellows.

    New arrival: Chroma Carbon Adventurer

I've been patient and waited the minimum 14 weeks for it to be made - and it arrived this morning, together with a fresnel screen and extra bag bellows.

  20. Re: Metering on vacation - iPhone app or Seiconic

I have carried a Sekonic meter, but now find a simple digital camera, especially with a histogram display, does a better job for metering a whole scene. I carry a Leica CL, but others would do, and...
  21. Re: How are Camera Bellows UK bellows holding up over time???

    Who's a pretty boy then?
New bellows, arrived and glued yesterday, first stretch today.
No problems with quality, colour and fit.
No disasters with the fitting: there's a good wide surface to glue...
  22. Re: How are Camera Bellows UK bellows holding up over time???

I have ordered replacement bellows for my Gandolfi. I sent the measurements as specified on the website. I suspect my current bellows are not original - they look a poor match and not precisely...

Re: A really nice cable release

I was advised to get a long one, and I'm glad I did. Everything in large format is on a bigger scale, so having a cable release that you can operate from the back of the camera is useful. Mine is...

I'm beginning to realise that I would be better off editing mainly in Photoshop rather than Lightroom, for these reasons. LR is more useful for the many similar digital images I generate, but PS is...

I've been doing that once I have finalised the colour. I'm an obsessive colour tweaker though, so I'd rather work non-destructively on a dng if I can. I'm just trying to work out which are...

    Re: Reversal vs negative

I still like the idea of evaluating a colour film directly - I find it difficult as an orange negative, though I find less problem with B&W.

I'm willing to take the first comment as positive and the second as negative:). The yellow colour of the rock is accurate, but I may have left the slate grey as a bit too blue.

Re: Tripod for Wista metal field camera

I recently bought a FLM CP30 M4 II. No centre column, 20kg capacity, and surprisingly light (1.45kg) and tall (1.63m): 30mm leg top diameter, 60mm disk, and very stable. I added a Novoflex levelling...
