  1. Re: Looking for a brass 8x10 barrel style lens with either rotating aperture or iris

Re: Suter serial numbers and dates.

This is the same series as the Rapid shown in the summary of the 1900's catalogue.
As a small maker, Suter had to engrave F scales to satisfy the demands of very different markets.
    Your scale...
  3. Re: Which Petzvals have the Dallmeyer modification?

Just to add another known convert to the Dallmeyer rear cell design in the 20th Century.

The late series 1a Petzval from VoigtŠander also had it. This is the series that mostly had smaller sizes...
  4. Re: Looking for a brass 8x10 barrel style lens with either rotating aperture or iris

This has been someone's unfinished project!

The camera is a complete 18x24cm camera. A previous owner has purchased an extra Kodak 8x10 item - I am not quite sure what it is - probably with the...
  5. Re: Looking for a brass 8x10 barrel style lens with either rotating aperture or iris

    Dear Nelly/Ellen!

I think this is probably an 18x24cm camera - very few were exported from Continental Europe modified to 8x10"!
Apart from lens makers you mentioned - and a few others - retail...

Re: Some Soft Focus Lens Sales Information

Renewing this thread happens just about once every month now!

Anyway, here is a "Virgin" entry!

Eckhardt Optics take on the Dallmeyer 3B - using glass available a few years ago.

    Unused...

    Re: What camera is this?

This is a very typical French (Walnut?) 18x24cm travel camera. It is the "turn the bellows" type which reduces the width of the camera. Because of the necessary rigidity, the bellows are often...
  8. Re: Adjustable Spacing in Jamin Darlot Petzval Lenses

Just a quick response, as it is well past my bedtime!

Surely, the illustrated version (which I have not seen in real life!) is another ingenious brass design to facilitate extra use of the...
  9. Re: Which Petzvals have the Dallmeyer modification?

When I wrote "later Cabinet series", I meant sometime in the 20th Century! This is from the Professional Kodak Catalogue of 1934. Of course, sales of Portrait Petzvals were pretty low by then as the...
  10. Re: Which Petzvals have the Dallmeyer modification?

It has been written in another thread, but deserves to be repeated here-

Ross's later Cabinet series adopted the Dallmeyer rear lens arrangement!

Re: Three Dry Plates from Bergheil

Good choice of subjects - with very different light values at different distances. I have still some of the early Lane plates (1/1 plate) and must get round to using then soon. My experiences with...

Unrealistic listing and BIN prices have become an integral part of Ebay and finding out what the agreed prices were is just about impossible.

    Re: e.degen paris?

    There are always surprises!

It has a construction which differs from the other "double ended flanges". There is most similarity with the simple Jamin/Darlot system with a barrel which allows a...

Re: Lerebours Serial Number - Rice Writing

Sorry - a bit late - but I have now added 10173 to the list. This is still on page 7 - posting no. 63!

It shows L et S were not very interested in WHS, even very late in their production.

Just checking what LFPF had on Edouard DEGEN!

VOlume no.12 of the Pont/Princelle series on French photography contributors 1838/1939 (from Chevallier to Demaria) includes 3+ pages on DEGEN. There...

    Re: CC Harrison coming

Sometimes it is just enjoyable to read about other people's specialities, rather than attempt a feeble contribution!
My purchase on it's way is an Ed. Degen (the elder) from the same period (1865)....
  17. Re: Know anything about this J.H. Dallmeyer Lens?

    This, I think, is unique!!

The only reason for the lack of a serial number and the "Iris diaphragm" label that I can think of, is that it is a shop display item which shows the "new" iris version...
  18. Re: Eastman Dry Plate & Film Co camera - restoration

I agree with just about all your points - but there some models that approach the typical UK style field cameras.
UK book plate holders could have been adopted to follow the UK tradition.

Re: Field 45 has D stamped on it?

Yes, the later Tachihara series. I think they all have serial numbers (year/no. that year) on the underside of one the base transverse sections. See earlier thread on Tachihara!...
  20. Re: Eastman Dry Plate & Film Co camera - restoration

As I hinted at in a previous note, this is not UK made - but a product of Rochester USA!
Eastman were extremely aggressive in buying up all the small makers of field cameras in Rochester and...
  21. Re: Eastman Dry Plate & Film Co camera - restoration

Channing & Dunn give this Oxford Street address as being from 1890 - their first address was in Soho Square in 1885.
They say that UK production began in the 20th century - but by then they had...
  22. Re: Which Petzval Lens for 8x10 wet plate?

12"/300mm sounds about right. There are quite a lot of these around as it was the adopted standard for full plate size. Anything longer wil be at an awful premium in asking price and weigh...
  23. Re: Hermagis Serial numbers Need your help with a database

No new dates - or serial numbers - but certainly some new insights into Hermagis and Maugey Aine!

This completed listing has surely been seen by most correspondents in this thread!

  24. Re: Waterhouse Stop Fabrication Alternatives in 2019?

    what Garret said!

I often make "an alternative solution" when the flange/ring is absent. But need a "real" new flange sometimes.
  25. Re: Waterhouse Stop Fabrication Alternatives in 2019?

Apart from some process lenses, the use of Waterhouse stops was unusual after 1900, as multi-bladed irises became reliable.
19th century makers were very slow to engrave lens data on their lenses....
  26. Re: Should the price in For Sale threads be undeletable after the sale is completed?

Which is why I didn't suggest it!
Putting the price in the title would certainly be a doable thing.
  27. Re: Should the price in For Sale threads be undeletable after the sale is completed?

Yes, that is certainly the answer I expected!

I find the "privacy" argument completely fallacious as members here can have complete anonymity through their chosen "names" or set-up an extra lfpf...
  28. Re: Should the price in For Sale threads be undeletable after the sale is completed?

That is my personal view as well!
  29. Should the price in For Sale threads be undeletable after the sale is completed?

Apologies if this has been up before!

I note that it has become common for the more commercial listers to "clean-up" after them. Now we have attracted a number of these and they are often a very...

Reading the old 2009 thread, it looks as Emil got hold of exactly the same combination - rather than the "studio shutter" he mentioned.

Re: Some Soft Focus Lens Sales Information
