90mm F/4.5 CALTAR-II N MC
The Caltar 90mm f/4.5 (private label by Rodenstock) is also comparable to the Grandagon or Nikkor SW.
Just put mine up for sale.
...
Looks like my 90mm F4.5 CALTAR-II N would not cover 4X10 since the image circle is 236mm at f/22 according to the charts for the Rodenstock equivalent. My 90mm would cover 5X7 if I ever expanded...
Am I correct to understand 4X10 would require 8X10 lenses to provide adequate coverage?
Anybody care to share photos taken with the new Schneider Apo-Tele-Xenar Compact 350mm f/11? Are there any online galleries that highlight this lens?
What have you found that you like or dislike...
I purchased both used lenses from KEH. I thought if they grade a lens EX+, a lens should be in good shape. I did not feel comfortable purchasing from eBay, since I would not have an idea what to...
From a novice perspective, I think you are on the right track.
I just started with large format, and purchased a 4X5 Chamonix with universal bellows, and a 90mm and 210mm. I plan to focus on...
How about this approach? Instead of masking can you just use a cardboard cutout for the ground glass with the desired ratio? Maybe that is what you call masking anyway.
As an example a 4X5 could...
The 4X5 format has a low entry cost and will give me an opportunity to explore large format photography. I plan to experiment with aspect ratios to determine my preference.
I plan to crop...
The Caltar is the same as the 90mm Rodenstock Grandagon N f/4.5.
Image circle @ f/22 is 236
4X5 excess coverage is 82.3
4X5 excess coverage % is 34.87%
According to the charts on this site. I...
Oops, I would only loose 1/4th of the film with a 3X5. I would loose half with a 2X5.
5X8 is still double the film area of a 4X5.
I think I like this idea since 4X5 film has a lot of options for film, labs, etc.
If I crop (postprocessing) my 4X5 photos to 3X5 (or 1:1.618) aspect ratio, what enlargements are possible?
I now think I understand that I am not limited to the high f/stops, i.e. f/22, f/32, f/45 etc. and that I can use f/5.6, f/8 etc. if I want. I will try to study the photos to learn how the DOF is...
I have read how to choose f/stop at the following link,(http://www.largeformatphotography.info/fstop.html) but I have the impression you need to stop down further with LF lenses.
If I would...
From the few 4X5 LF photos I have taken, I like the 5X8 ratio. I plan to take a couple B&W photos each week (use up my box of 100 sheets) to get comfortable with the adjustment and exposure process....
Who is Juri? Oh I think you meant Jiri: http://www.vasina.net/?p=94
After reading the info at the link, I thought of another approach. Since 4X5 is easy to work with and as long as you don't...
Are there less film availability issues using 5X8 color film compared to 5X7?
Chamonix offers a 5X8 camera described here, although it appears to be priced $1,000 higher than the 5X7.

Do you always use a lens hood with large format?
I try to use a lens hood whenever possible on my digital camera.
Is the Lee system pretty much industry standard?
Does the Lee system work...
I tried the hat method for my first shots, but would like to know what lens hood or shade more experienced photographers use. I have read a few posts about Lee products and a standard adapter ring....
Thanks for the reel case idea. I will check them out at the local Cabelas.
Robert,
I purchased both a 90mm and 210mm to help determine which end of the spectrum I prefer. I was originally considering a 150mm, but one bit of advice I received suggested it could be either...
What storage bag would you recommend to hold up to 3 lenses?
Brand, model, vendor, etc.
I have been wrapping the lenses in some soft cloth, but would like to have a rectangular bag with a...
Robert,
I just purchased my first LF camera, also a Chamonix, and it seems to be a good camera to learn on.
I just took my first photos and posted them here:...
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I tried to bracket the photos, but could not figure out which photo had what f/stop. The sun was also ducking behind the clouds. Here are links to all four photos...
Since I don't have a darkroom etc., the local camera shop developed the film and scanned the images to a CD. Thought I would just tackle one thing at a time and getting comfortable with the 4X5 is a...
I am not quite sure how to attach larger images so I just added some links in the original post.
What type of fine tuning would you suggest?
I like the 90mm photo better than the 210mm shot...
I finally took my first large format photos. Attached is a 90mm shot with my Chamonix 4X5 as well as a 210mm shot. The f/stop for both photos were either f/22 or f/32. I am not quite sure if I...
Thanks for the info.
I am going to take a 15 minute hike to the site. I will try two shots with the 210mm and two shots with the 90mm.
I will start at f/22 with both lenses and may try one...
I am attempting to take my first landscape LF photo. I would like to blur the motion of a a creek in the foreground, and have a really high quality print. I am using a 210mm f/5.6 lens, 4X5 camera,...
PM email sent with info.
Dave,
Welcome to the forum from another Kansas City member! I am just getting into LF photography myself. The last time I worked in a darkroom was in high school in the 70's.
I sent you a PM...
I just saw your post from three weeks ago. Guess I should have subscribed to my own thread (first post).
I will PM you! I still have not taken my first photo, but I have all the equipment.
When I was trying to decide on a 4X5 over the past several months, I watched several sell for $700-$800 on ebay. I ended up purchasing a Chamonix instead.
Jan,
I am just starting LF and looks like the lens selection process was similar for both of us. You will probably bypass me since you have MF experience. This summer should be fun!
That makes sense. I plan to get comfortable with my 90mm and 210mm before looking for a third lens. I will keep the 350mm in mind in case my preference is toward that direction. If not I may just...
I am trying to decide if this lens would be a future addtion. In looking at my other two lense, the 350 would provide extra reach with a similar step increase as shown below.
large...
What limitations does this lens have with a Chamonix 4X5 (universal bellows) or 5X7?
How much excess coverage does this lens have with a 4X5 or 5X7?
What are the 35mm equivalent focal lengths...
By the way there is a Nikkor SW 90mm f/4.5 for sale on this forum.

Drew,
I like your avatar, it is very similar to mine. I was using mine on nikonians.org and I transferred it over when I joined this forum. Mine is a photo of my dad's Folding Cartridge Premo...
I know this is probably a simple question and available on the LF web site, but not knowing enough about the subject makes it difficult finding where to look. - Think about when you were young and...
