Re: Pricing Aluminum Plates and Sheets

Marc, I think that's the way I'm gonna go eventually.
I ordered 100 4x5 plates from Lund, they'll serve as my learning plates.
If I get reasonably proficient after 100 plates, I'll start ordering...

Re: Pricing Aluminum Plates and Sheets

    Thanks again, Paul and Garrett.

Paul, I priced 4x5 plates only. Larger sizes may be differently priced.

    These are both 0.250 thick

    Ok, thanks Garret and Paul.
I always thought the Vesta was a "modified Petzval" design.

    Pricing Aluminum Plates and Sheets

For those who use, or intend to use, aluminum for their wet plate work.

Options here in Canada are expensive and limited. Even with expensive USPS shipping to Canada, sheet metal goods are a...
  5. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

I bought a Vesta lens, which is a Petzval type, but maybe not 100% kosher Petzval. It's often described as a "Petzval design".
Anyway, I bought it becaiuse I like the centre sharpness offered by...

Re: Wet Plate Image Sharing, June 2020

Paul, it's a lovely photo, but what strikes me more about it is how clean your technique is.
It's also got quite a dynamic range of tones for a wet plate.
    Superb start to this thread!

    Re: Scanning Finished Tintype

Just picked up an Epson V39 off the local Craiglist for $35.00. I didn't want to risk scratching the glass on my Creo. It costs a lot to replace.

The V39 is a nice little machine:

    About the...
  10. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

    Thanks for confirming, Garrett.
Most of these lenses are quite common and in barrel. It goes to prove what you said in an earlier thread that WP doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor.
  11. Re: Equipment needs, cameras and lenses. Making, buying, adapting

I have a few lenses that I plan on using for WP. I like how they look on film and I hope they'll work well for tintypes.

    Re: Scanning Finished Tintype

Thanks all. When time comes, I'll try lid open and closed, see what works best.
I still think I'd prefer to keep my Creo for scanning non-metallic items, so I'll probably spring for a $50 Epson V39...

    Re: Scanning Finished Tintype

Excellent, thanks Mark! Next time I'll ask about Sandarac, since that's part of the B&S kit.

Should I be worried about an unvarnished plate scratching the scanner glass?

    Re: Scanning Finished Tintype

Well, eventually I hope to make some decent tintypes.
Then I'd scan them and print on an Epson.

If I only needed to display for web, I'd use the MePhone in that instance.

For those who do scan their tintypes, do you scan with the lid open? Is this the correct procedure?

    Gotta agree here.
