    Re: Spotting

For what it's worth, I visited the great Florida BW landscape photographer Clyde Butcher's gallery/lab in Venice Florida a few years ago. In his workshop there was this guy leaning over a drafting...
  5. Re: Epson Perfection V800 adjusting for as much as sharpness as possible

Is Silverfast sharpening the scans automatically? That may account for why they all look pretty similar. Is there a way to shut sharpening off?
  6. Re: Epson Perfection V800 adjusting for as much as sharpness as possible

I'm sorry. I meant the Unsharp Mask check box, not Focus checkbox in Epsonscan.

    It should have said :
Double verify that the Unsharp Mask is not checked. For some reason Epsonscan always seems...

I wonder if anyone has tried those little clip on magnifier lenses that you can clip to your glasses and turn into position when you need them?

    Re: Chamonix Whole Plate Camera!

At 75, I'm sure film will outlive me. And I just bought a Chamonix 4x5. So I have faith. Or stupidity. :)
  9. Re: Epson Perfection V800 adjusting for as much as sharpness as possible

The best setting is different for each of my two 4x5 holders. One was in the center. The other was in between the center and the lowests setting. MAke sure all four sliders are in the saem...

    Re: Chamonix Whole Plate Camera!

Thanks Roger. So it's just another view film camera that shoots 6 7/16 x 8 7/16 size film? Is it regular film? BW? COlor? Who makes the film? Who sells it? It seems like a limited market and...

    Re: Chamonix Whole Plate Camera!

Film and print size availability? But maybe you are using it for other purposes. So that's why I asked the question. Do you use other processes beside standard film? I'm trying to be educated on...
  13. Re: Epson Perfection V800 adjusting for as much as sharpness as possible

I saw the difference on my V850. It was obvious. Did you scan without sharpening?

  16. Re: Anyone ever had problems with Epson V700 producing blue streaks, blotches?

Never saw that on my V600. I use Epsonscan. Maybe you should try to uninstall and reinstall your software with the latest software downloaded from Epson site.
  17. Re: Excited and Stoked, 4x5 Black Edition Intrepid

I just started on 4x5 and there is a learning curve. I shot Tmax 100 (10) and 400 (10) to learn a little, now shooting Velvia 50. Still making mistakes. Aside from that, my biggest issue is I need...

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Steve: PS. The V850 cropped the picture especially at the top. There's big vignetting with the Howtek at the top. Is that because of no center filter or caused by the scanner? The blue gradient...

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Nice scans and shot. They're pretty close at least in Flickr. It's hard to tell resolution quality and sharpness differences since both are reduced. The sun is blooming in V850. Wonder what causes...
  25. Re: Different versions of Slide scanned on Howtek

Doesn't soft proofing have more to do with lightness and darkness of the print rather than color quality?
  26. Re: Different versions of Slide scanned on Howtek

What's the expression? If it's working don't fix it.

A side question. Is anyone including me every going to realize whether its in Adobe RGB or sRGB, or ProPhoto, or whatever. How many colors...
  27. Re: Gregory Crewdson's 'An Eclipse of Moths'

  28. Re: Different versions of Slide scanned on Howtek

I don't print much. So I do everything in sRGB since it gets posted on the web. Or I watch it on my 4K 75" UHD TV or monitor. My monitor is calibrated for sRGB. I have no idea what the TV is...
  29. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

Thanks for the explanation. I think I got it. So the CF extends the length of the lens barrel so it starts to physically vignette when the aperture is fully open, especially with wide angle lenses. ...
  30. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

What is mechanical vignetting as opposed to cos^4 vignetting? Why do Rodenstock and Schneider recommend that wide angle lenses be stopped down two stops when a CF is attached but not when it isn't...
  31. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

  32. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

Why don't Nikon 90mm and Fujinon 75mm have their own center filters? Are their falloffs less than Schneider and Rodenstock 75mm and 90mm lenses?

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Steve, this last Grand Canyon in Portra seems best to me. The contrast seems more normal. It could be because it's portra vs. Provia for the previous four. But it seems more natural. Also, the...
  36. Re: Different versions of Slide scanned on Howtek

  37. Re: Epson V850 Scanner: can you save unprocessed scans?

  39. Re: Epson V850 Scanner: can you save unprocessed scans?

Epsonscan allows you to scan flat. No adjustments sy all. Do all adjustments in post. Or, I set the black and white points just past the histogram and set the output to 0 and 255 before I scan. ...
  40. Re: Different versions of Slide scanned on Howtek

Here's how the bw negative was scanned for me.

The scan was done at 4000 ppi using the native aperture (6.35 microns) for that resolution. It’s 16 bit RGB directly into Gamma 2.2 Adobe RGB color...
