  1. Suggest a 12" (300mm) lens for portrait work on 8x10?

Just a thought. I have several 300mm f4.5 barrel lenses because they were cheap. If you are willing to approach portraits with film like you do wet plate (without using strobes), ie. making exposures...
  2. Re: Suggest a 12" (300mm) lens for portrait work on 8x10?

Could you explain what didnít work with the ones you tried and maybe a bit more of the type of look that youíre after? Itís hard to suggest without knowing more about your preferences.

    Re: Landscape 5x7: Chamonix 57N3 or 45H-1 ?

Have you considered just making the jump to 8x10? Every step costs money.... unless itís very clear to you that you wonít go there....
  4. After all, why not? Why shouldn't I fall into THIS hole?

To me, thereís room for everything, and you donít need to choose. Itís like choosing between Mozart and Beethoven. Well, I choose both.

Thereís photography where LF, as a tool, excels and thereís...
  5. Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

Iíd suggest you spend a plate where you point to a uniformly lit subject, even a wall, and make 4 exposures by sliding the dark slide in 1/4ís covering a range of 4 stops around where you think it...
  6. Re: 8x10 Photography Compared to 4x5 Photography?

  7. Re: 8x10 Photography Compared to 4x5 Photography?

Of course itís inversely proportional! The best photographic works ever were shot with Minox (8◊11 mm) and 110 film!!

  8. What is the current trend on using dark cloth?

For 4x5, during the not summer times I just use my jacket. Summertime I pack a dark cloth.

For 8x10 I always pack a dark cloth. Jacketís a bit too tight sometimes.

Well, thereís several options for new 4x5 out there but I think this is the only option I know for a new ďstudioĒ portrait camera. Thatís really the novelty.

Iím dreaming one of those too. Theyíre just so beautiful! I love in the video you hear roosters in the background. Would probably go with the non native holder, though, to be able to switch to film...

  13. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

You can get a 8x10 that weights 6.5 lbs, two lenses and 2-3 light film holders, etc, you can get everything you need under 25lbs, add water/food etc, and you have a doable load for long hikes.

    Is...
  14. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

Címon guys, a ries tripod is 12 lbs and their head is 4 lbs.

You can get a CF tripod in the 3-4 lbs range and a leveling head for another lb. thatís like 3-4 times lighter.

    Iím sure all the...

Whereís $45 for 25 8x10? I havenít seen it cheaper than around $125.
  18. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

There is already a separate thread on ďbest Ē. We canít make sweeping statements here. Letís try to answer OPís question.

The problem though is that the OP doesnít say what 8x10 camera he has or...
  19. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

Whatís the use case? If youíre hiking, a wood tripod and a ries head is not a (realistic) option for most people.

Look into a CF tripod from Gitzo, FLM or RSS instead, or a Leofoto if cost is...

  23. Re: Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

A couple of notes... reciprocity isnít the same in general so the numbers may not be directly comparable. It would be best to run some test comparisons in the <1 for FP4+ so that reciprocity is not a...
  24. Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

I havenít done a lot of comparisons against other developers, but I find Diafine works very well with your plates.
  25. Re: Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

My experience with shooting in a studio environment with incandescent light and modifiers is that both ISO 25 and ISO 2 plates need 2.5 stops more light (is. the ďtrueĒ iso is lower by 2.5 stops)...

For anything more than a morning hike nearby, I will take ALL of them for the system Iím carrying.

    Chamonix C45F-2 vs. C45H-1

    That was a good summary.

This question comes up frequently. If you want minimum setup time with some quirks and limitations, go H, if you want max flexibility and backpacking compactness, go F.
