Re: Mountain Lion near Santa Cruz

I used to live in Los Gatos - and the cats referred to were Mountain Lions. I remember a few years back that there was a lion sleeping in a tree in a neighborhood near Stanford that was shot by...

  6. Re: Drum Scan vs DSLR vs Epson Scan (From Nick Carver's Youtube Channel)

    Hi Pere.

I don't think anyone says the Epson isn't a nice scanner - it is and for the price it's hard to beat. If it had autofocus it would be a better scanner. And we can all do good work with...
  7. Re: Drum Scan vs DSLR vs Epson Scan (From Nick Carver's Youtube Channel)

I don't even have a drum scanner - just a Lowly IQsmart 2. And I don't prefer the Epson 750/850. I have one, but haven't seen a need to use it since I got the Creo/Kodak. Which is what I actually...

  9. Re: Likely Very Naive Question, sheet film then scan to produce a digital print.

Frankly I like the look of what I get with the hybrid process better than the look of digital capture. Particularly with B&W.

    I use digital of course - a Cannon 5D from 2006, a Canon 5D III, an...

    Re: Hasselblad Flextight 343

Yessssss!!!!!!!! Just one (well maybe 1 1/2 Epson evangelists)

But to be fair I've made a lot of nice prints from Epson 750 scanned 5 x 7 B&W negs and no complaints from the folks who've bought...

  12. Re: Long throw cable release - Betax shutter

I use the Schreck cable releases and they're great but the throw isn't quite long enough for some of these old shutters. The best ones I've found are the old Prontors - the ones that have the two...

  16. Re: Scanning 4x5: Buying an Epson Flatbed VS my current DSLR (5DII) VS Lab Scans

I went with an IQsmart 2 - I got it refurbed by so it was around $5k. Not that much more than a Canon 5D with a good macro lens I guess.

I still have the Epson 750 sitting around - not sure if...
  17. Re: Please Sign This Petition to Adobe Regarding DUST and SCRATCHES on Scans

  18. Re: Please Sign This Petition to Adobe Regarding DUST and SCRATCHES on Scans

I always use the Spot healing Tool and can usually clean up a photo with it in 10 - 15 minutes.Less if it's really clean, more if the cat walks on the negatives before I scan them.
  19. Re: Small Cable For Linhof Recessed Lens Board?

  20. Re: Small Cable For Linhof Recessed Lens Board?

I had a couple of those small extensions around, for some reason that I forget, so I used one in the recessed board, but they're impractically pricey. They do work OK, though

    5 x 7 Ektar 100 available

  24. Re: Epson V850 work-around for scanning 5x7 negatives.

  27. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

    Hi Pere

I get it - we all get it. You like the Epson. Good. If it works for you that's great. I don't think it's a bad scanner. I've sold a bunch of prints made from Epson scans and if I didn't...

    Re: Platinum Prints

A long time ago Carl Siembab's Boston Gallery had a great collection of Frederic Evans's prints stashed away in a drawer. Very very impressive even if you aren't a particular fan of cathedral stairs.
  30. Re: Too late, too expensive for this year, but maybe the next? Little Italy and Autum

No no no - Go for it - it's one of the last places you can experience true transportation chaos. Little by little REAL Boston driving is fading away, soon to only exist in the oral history...
  31. Re: Too late, too expensive for this year, but maybe the next? Little Italy and Autum

Oh come on!!! Driving in Boston is a piece of cake. It's where I learned to drive so here are a few rulles of the road that most "furriners" ie not from Boston don't know.

    Pedestrrians belong on...
  32. Re: question about using the 4x5 Epson scanner lens to scan 5.9" wide and stitch 8x10

Hi Michael. I thought I had responded to your question of how to mount 4 x 10 on the Epson but it doesn't show u here, so here goes again

Just wet mount the 4 x 10 on the carrier glass (the glass...
  33. Re: question about using the 4x5 Epson scanner lens to scan 5.9" wide and stitch 8x10

    For two-up 4 x 10. why not just cut the 8 x 10 in two?
  34. Re: question about using the 4x5 Epson scanner lens to scan 5.9" wide and stitch 8x10

The carrier is what Epson calls a fluid mounting station. It came with the 750 but not the 700. It sits on top of a plastic base with a grid on it and you use the grid to position the neg and then...
  35. Re: question about using the 4x5 Epson scanner lens to scan 5.9" wide and stitch 8x10

I haven't tried to stitch 8 x 10 but I have scanned 5 x 7 in the high res area of the 750 (Wet mounted on the glass carrier) so 5 x 8 will work just fine.

IIRC in VueScan you can select the area...

Re: Creo iQsmart3 and Supreme II scan speed

I have an IQsmart 2 it deivers 4300 ppi and is as slow as molasses in winter - ie it takes forever. But the result is outstanding. I believe the IQsmart 3 delivers about 5500 ppi.

    If I run at...
  37. Re: More advanced scanner for 4x5 than Epson flatbed?

Yes, one would assume that the high end scanners used good sharpening algorithms - perhaps the best available when they were built. Which was a long time ago.

    I've looked for sharpening artifacts...
  38. Re: More advanced scanner for 4x5 than Epson flatbed?

I've used Kami on my Epson 750 - worked very nicely. Since switching to the IQsmart I haven't bothered. It seldom takes more than a few minutes to spot the photo in Photoshop. I once timed the wet...
  39. Re: Does any scanner have a 3 exposure HDR scan option?

I think the IQsmart 3 and maybe Eversmart Supreme have a chip cooler.

I have to manage with a mere IQsmart 2 - boo hoo. And I don't try to scan anything more than once - it's my job to get the...
