Also I have two 4x5 b&w scans off an epson flatbed scanner, saved as tif's in greyscale in CS2. My friend's copy of CS3 opens them as "Camera Raw 4.0-TIFF"'s.
Yes the file was saved in Adobe RGB(1998). The printer said his copy of CS4 would only recognize the file as a Nikon Raw file, he didn't specify NEF. I didn't even know I could save in Nikon Raw from...
I recently took a tif file to my local printer and experienced this problem. The file was scanned on a Nikon Coolscan and saved as a tif in CS2 (LZW'd). However when the printer (who's running CS4)...
There is indeed a technique for getting two different (perpendicular) planes of focus sharp at the same time with the lense wide open!
By placing the camera such that is angled down at a scene and...
Adobe's DNG format addresses this.

I've shot some CXS high speed blue X-ray film. I tried some sunny 16 shots @ ISO 50 that were over exposed, 100 ISO was better.

Another converted garage. Wet darkroom (trays), and contact prints. My 'studio' is just big enough to do single person portraits.

Agreed.

I would give HP5 a shot. It pushes to 800 or 1600 well.

I've encountered some pretty rude border people coming back into this country from Baja California. You can find jerks just about anywhere.

Hang em. Hang em high. (after dipping in photoflo).
Pretty much two, in case I want to develop differently.
I was wondering if anyone out there is scanning transparencies using Prophoto RGB, and how they might be using it in their workflow. I am assuming one would capture and color balance in Prophoto and...

Thanks Sandy

Boy! Scanning seems to be the most controversial aspect of this art form. The instructions that came w/ my nikon coolscan recommend scanning at a resolution based on the output size needed for the...
Cool! Thanks for posting

I've had no problems mailing E6 in the original film boxes. You could consider express mail if you don't mind spending the $. I worry more about buying new film from B&H as the film is shipped...
'Large Format Photography in the Modern Era'
I've been using A&I in L.A. (aandi.com). They do great work and show no signs of backing away from LF and film. Decent turn-around times too.

The road goes up to Whitney Portal campground at about 8600'. The creek was quite cold 1st week of last October.
Have a great trip, watch out for bears.

Great thread! Got to try this...

B&Ws within 1-3 days, (my own DR) trannies sit in the freezer until I have enough to send to the lab.
Hey all, I'm looking for advice and recommendations for a glossy paper for 4x5 contact prints. I am presently using Ilford MGIV RC De Luxe for this purpose and it works really great for matte finish....
Mine is 100mm square. It is beveled on the back side 5mm in from each edge.
So that's why Hunter Thompson used an illustrator instead of a photographer!
submission sent.
Hats off to cyrus and frank petronio for putting this together.
Although not LF, I shot and processed 5 rolls of 6 year old (refrigerated) velvia in 35mm with no problems.
Yes, especially with slide films. It's also about the only thing my digital point & shoot is good for.
Ted, please let us know if and when you set up a site in San Berdoo.

Hey Pete,
I experienced a similar problem to yours when I used a purple colored contrast filter (can't remember its number) through my Omega enlarger, which is what led me to make my own ND...
You can make ND filters out of b&w film. You can control the density by adjusting the exposure of the film. I made some by shooting a white board and placing the value in differtent zones. I can then...
Jonathan,
Not sure were you live. I send my 4x5 trannies to AandI photo in Hollywood. I remove the film from the holders and repack them in the original 3 fold box (and wrapper) that the film...
Thanks for the advice and technical info. Unfortunately there was way too much air traffic in and out of Las Vegas to try any long exposures. This suprised me as the skies just west of the park are...
I plan to shoot some star trail shots in Death Valley later this week and have had little success in researching exposure details. I plan to do long exposures (1hr or more) and can find little...
I love 4x5 trannies too, however after 8 years of shooting 35mm velvia I find the freedom and increased latitude of b&w liberating and just plain fun.
John
Yes you can compensate for under exposure by over developing, however you may experience a slight loss of highlight detail. Also you will need to increase development by 20-30%. Based on a base time...
Good point. Thanks for the input.

Hey John,
RE: Contrast
If the scene is indeed gray, dramatic and moody, I'm wondering if a high-key approach might work.
Most importantly, don't forget to bring your hardhat!
Good luck
