You're fine. Setting the meter to 200 gives you a safety factor against underexposure due to the idiosyncrasies of metering, errors etc. No need to make it more complicated.

You got it. And many (probably most) people at the top of the field do the same.
That's not a fact. It can be difficult to determine the "right" exposure under tricky conditions. An alternate exposure or bracketing can be worth it. The best photographers I know often make several...
Agreed.
Drew mentions having a map instead of flying blind, which of course makes sense, but when it comes to exposure the map is already given to us in the form of ISO speed.
Cutting ISO...
Makes sense to me. Like I said, Ron didn’t write the stuff on the PF site for TF-5.
Doremus, just some things to keep in mind which make direct comparisons difficult:
1. Different assumptions regarding acceptable final amounts of retained thiosulfate/silver-thiosulfate complexes...
It was Wimberley who started the revival in the late 1970s. Also Hutchings used regular mildly acidic Kodak fixers. In any case it doesn’t matter. If you like TF-4 there is no reason not to use it....
Hi Doremus, unfortunately the tech sheets for both TF-4 and TF-5 (like many PF products) are mostly marketing/hyperbole so there is not a great deal of information. The instructions for both indicate...
Yes the Book of Pyro... not a very good book about pyro. :) In any case, the point is TF-5 will work every bit as well as TF-4. That includes negatives processed in staining developers. There is...
Sea water does make a good wash medium (it’s like a weak hypo clearing agent), and can even be a very very very slow fixer mostly for silver chloride emulsions so yeah sea water is pretty neat.
The pH of your water is irrelevant. Water has essentially no buffering capacity so its pH is totally overwhelmed by the chemicals you add to it. Furthermore imagewise stain from pyrogallol or...
I was referring to imagewise stain from pyrogallol or catechol developers, which OP referred to. Regarding anti-halation dyes/TMax and fixers, bogus. But use whatever you want. They all do the job.
They will fix the same and wash the same. Neither will have any affect on imagewise stain (nor will any other non-hardening rapid fixer). TF-5 is neutral rather than alkaline so less odour than TF-4....
Chuck,
Equipment/process design is a balancing act (you can't have everything). In the case of sheet film development there are various things to consider, and different makers and photographers...
The 2-year rule of thumb is good but unfortunately in this day and age that guarantees nothing where photographic chemicals are concerned, especially liquids. Distribution channels aren’t what they...
I hate to bring this up, but realistically does anyone here need to worry that dry-mounting is the reason museums are not acquiring their prints?
George Tice does something similar. The print is dry-mounted to paper which is then affixed to the mounting board.
Some people prefer to just flatten the FB prints (heat flattening in dry mount press works well) and attach them to mount board using those little corner things that hold the print but don’t adhere...
Sequestered unmixed powders are a different story. They can have long shelf lives. Generally only non-rapid (sodium thiosulfate) fixers are supplied this way but rapid fixers are the better...
Good news that they responded quickly. I assume at this point this was from Sino Promise as they took over the Kodak chemicals business.
Fixer will not keep forever. I don’t recall Kodak indicating indefinite shelf life. That would be pretty surprising. As the Kodak product is very similar to the Ilford product we can use Ilford’s...
Yes Ryuji’s neutral rapid fix is as good as any standard rapid fix and it really doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that. Ammonium thiosulfate is always the active ingredient in rapid...
You ideally need a source for bulk ammonium thiosulfate which is typically sold in 60% solution. You’ll then have to do the math and see if it makes financial sense to mix vs buying large volumes of...
Alkaline rapid fixers such as TF-4 will have the ammonia smell depending on how alkaline. Neutral pH fixers should have relatively little odour. TF-5 is an example. You’re fine with Sprint. C-41 as...
Those are both terrific, rrunnertexas, especially the second one. Well done.
Maximum toning and the amount of potential colour shift will always depend heavily on the emulsion and the dilution of the toner. Even the developer used to develop the paper can sometimes have an...
Also Ulophot can flatten a FB print in the dry mount press in a minute. :)
Now this is interesting, and challenging.
Yes. What she goes on to say about this is not only interesting but frightening.
If you’re suggesting she would give me some sort of verbal smackdown, why? I didn’t comment on Sally Mann at all. She’s a terrific photographer in my opinion, not that it would matter what I think...
Nothing to discuss. It’s straight forward and subjective and that’s all. Flame bait with some dead horse beatings thrown in.
I agree. That was basically my point. Particularly in the case of a developer such as 510 pyro, there is little or nothing to go on, so it is up to the individual user to figure things out and come...
When it comes to these home-made concoctions it is really up to the individual user to try things for themselves and draw their own subjective conclusions. These user experiences may (or may not) be...
Whatever tech floats one's boat is fine and dandy, but recording tens of mostly superfluous data points about an exposure is about the spreadsheet.
Yes.
Talk about conplexificating nothing into a big deal.
Here’s how it’s done: 229153
Yeah I used to spend a good amount of time in NYC pre-corona but right now travelling is a nightmare, my Nexus expired etc.
I find that second one interesting. The landscape and point of view made me think of some of the Venera pictures on Venus. Death Valley is quite a place.
Dang. I would love to see this.
