I used to teach navigation and bushwalking (hiking) for a living. I wouldn't recommend relying on a GPS, and tell people that they need to be able to read and use a map and compass.

Learn how to steer the eye around the picture... Via tones and lines.. The easiest way to learn this is in bw. Tone trumps colour...
Learn 'balance'
Increase your visual literacy (study lots of photos & art if it interests you)
Copy, to learn but not to plagourise
Get a mentor / teacher

I really don't know... but here are some thoughts:
When you manipulate the photograph and in particular the tones people don't seem to ask "Is it photoshopped or you must have manipulated that.."...
