  1. Re: How many film holders do you bring for a day out?

I regularly go out on all day drives in the Dakotas on Saturday and usually Sunday. I take about six 4x5 holders per day. If 8x10 I only take two. I've now standardized on only shooting Ilford...

Buy a used Nikon D800e. Great camera with big sensor that's going cheap.

    Velostigmat for 8x10

Re: question for you wet platers

Wet plate seems to be about ISO 2 with fresh collodion. Using the Sunny 16 rule we get 1/2s @ f16. Reciprocity brings us to 1/32s @ f4. About the fastest I can shoot is 1/2s. They did use crude...

    Re: 90mm f8 vs 5.6

I just use a jacket for a dark cloth. Works fine. During the day I have no trouble focusing with an f8 lens. At night or in very low light I do notice increased difficulty. If you mostly only...

Re: 5x7 Kodak 2-D in real use

You can balance the camera by simply moving the front or rea standard around. I mostly only use a tripod block when using long lenses and the extension rail. I have some very heavy 19th C. brass...
  10. Re: Determining coverage/image circle of simple lenses

If the lens doesn't vignette in the corners, a good deal comes down to what you find as acceptable.

Re: 5x7 Kodak 2-D in real use

I have an 8x10 2D and sometimes use a 5x7 back. It's a great camera. I'm strictly an outdoor photographer. I use heavy 19th C. lenses and the 2D holds them well.

  13. Re: Exposure 40 min, f/5,6 in wet plate collodion process?

Apparently reciprocity isn't that much of a factor with wet plate. I once made a 10 minute exposure in cool damp weather, and placed a wet sponge inside my bellows near the tin.

  20. Re: What do I need to do to use a R.O.&C. Co Telephoto Cycle Poco D ?

What you are thinking of are called sheaths, not inserts. If your holders are for dry plates, you will need to either find some 5x7 film sheaths on ebay etc. or simply stick something about the same...
  21. Re: What do I need to do to use a R.O.&C. Co Telephoto Cycle Poco D ?

This probably takes a standard 5x7 holder. If so, you are in luck. You will also need an incident light meter and a reasonably sturdy tripod. And, a focus magnifier (called a "loupe"). For a dark...
