  1. Re: Need some decent photos of Calumet 8x10 camera back

In the winter I always wear a fedora when photographing. In the summer I wear a ratty cowboy hat to protect my face and neck from the sun. But that's also cuz I'm bald. The nice thing about larger...
  2. Re: Need some decent photos of Calumet 8x10 camera back

I have the C1. From looking at the second pdf from the links at the bottom; I'm wondering if I would get better results wearing a white dress shirt and tie. Like the three men grouped around the...

Thanks for the link! Since Young Camera Company is no longer making ground glasses, I just bought one from that guy in France. Recently dropped my C1 and while the camera was fine, the gg was not....
  4. Re: Rodinal 1+25, 1+50, 1+100 & 1+200 test on Ilford FP4+

This is interesting. I'd used Rodinal in the past, but stuck with HC 110. Then a couple years ago switched to Rodinal. I've done a lot of zone testing at 1:50 and 1:100 for contraction and expansion....

    Re: Wanderlust 4x5 Travelwide

When KEH were here in town I sold the TravelWide along with the 90mm Schneider to them, along with that Zero 69 pinhole, Sony A6100 and my 6x9 folder. All those formats that seemed cool to try but...

  7. Re: Bernd & Hilla Becher at the Metropolitan Museum

There was a room at the Stedelijk in 2002 that was lined with their series of factory buildings. Direct frontal shots of old garage warehouses. I remember struggling since the photographs were place...
  8. Re: Bernd & Hilla Becher at the Metropolitan Museum

I was just in Berlin and they required an N95 mask on the trains, but nowhere else. People weren't wearing one anywhere else, but were very compliant on the trains. In fact some transit authority...
  9. Re: Welp, I did it, I ordered a lightweight 8x10

Yes, it's good to think about what one can accomplish with such a camera. My Ebony 4x5 suffices for traveling and general use. But I'm not doing that with 8x10. So I identified certain use cases for...
  10. Re: Welp, I did it, I ordered a lightweight 8x10

Since I live in Seattle, when the time comes, I'll be taking a ferry to Bremerton to get it from Ries and getting that 10% discount. I also like the idea of buying something from a company here, as...

Re: RA-4/color darkroom printing in 2021

For myself, the biggest stumbling block to RA-4 printing is the demise of public color darkrooms. I rent and don't have the space for a color enlarger and don't see myself using drums. I was going to...
  13. Re: Welp, I did it, I ordered a lightweight 8x10

I had the Intrepid first release. I found that to be too tweaky to use and sold it. I hear they've fixed a lot of that stuff on the new ones.

My experiences with 8x10 taught me that vibration...
  14. Re: Bernd & Hilla Becher at the Metropolitan Museum

I won't be out until Sept/Oct and by then this will all be over. Right?

I just wear a mask and wash/sanitize my hands and accept the rest. The anecdotal part for me is that I used to get two or...
  15. Re: Bernd & Hilla Becher at the Metropolitan Museum

I'll be flying out for this. First retrospective of theirs I'll have access to since seeing the one at the Stedelijk museum in 2002. Of course, there's so much to see in NYC that this will obviously...
  16. Re: Air Travel Wwith LF Film: What should I Do?

With hand check they might open one of the packages since they can tell you've resealed them. So, send it back. On my trips my final day will include a trip to the post office to send my film off for...
  17. Re: Traveling by Air In July: How should I handle LF Film?

I suppose you could ask if those are the new CT scanners they have and if so, ask them for a hand check. Generally, a hand check is usually an agent swabbing right there in front of you. A long time...
  18. Re: Traveling by Air In July: How should I handle LF Film?

For years I've just let my film (Porta 160 and Trix 320 in 4x5 and Portra 800 and Trix 400 in 120) go through the scanners in my bags. My film holders go under the plane with my tripod and everything...
  19. Re: Most affordable copy stand with geared height adjustment? (Rack and pinion?)

Do not get the cheap Kaiser. That is a tweaky pos where the camera attaches to the stand. I'm looking at the Beseler because of my dissatisfaction with Kaiser and at $250, the Kaiser wasn't that...
  20. Re: Focus Stacking with 8x10 Large Format Film...Ben Horne

Nothing says "welcome to large format" like a bunch of old curmudgeons saying that someone should go digital because they're not doing it "right." Even if that person attains their goal of making a...

    Re: orthochromatic film?

I think you'd have to use a cyan filter since that's the opposite of red. But there's probably someone here that's actually done it as opposed to my speculation.

    Re: orthochromatic film?

What's wrong with the Ilford Ortho? I've shot that and developed in HC110. Rollei makes an ortho film that you can get at B&H. I'd use one of those before I'd mess around with X-Ray film.
  24. Re: Getting the correct temperature while developing at home?

I mentioned this to a friend and he sent me the Cinestill unit. Sorta like someone took one of those cooking deals and redesigned it specifically for photography. Pretty cool.

  26. Poll: Re: What's your #1 anxiety about LF (in your personal life)?

Re: Calumet C1 Repair and questions

@reddesert Thanks for the tips! I'll get some steel wool then, I don't want to damage the camera.

The problem with that is the base of the C1 is 6.5" x 5" and looks like so:

Which is smaller than the the Kessler. I looked into a Majestic head and it's pretty cheap used. Might be the...

  36. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Pere - I think you misunderstand, I don't pay someone in NYC to scan my negatives. I rent a Flextight by the hour and scan them myself (in 3F). The scanner is much easier to use than the Epson and...
  37. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

I'm very interested in this thread. In 2013, I had a show with 21 prints, mostly 30x40 with three at 40x50. I scanned them in NYC on a Flextight in NYC and though I had no experience whatsoever with...
