Re: Bride dies at "trash the dress" shoot

Sorry, I thought that you were disputing the 'in water' part of the physics. I suspect that no-one would dispute that a wet dress is heavy out of the water.

One of my friends is a 'messy girl*'...

Re: Bride dies at "trash the dress" shoot

I think that Robert's point was that the weight of water in water is zero, in the sense that a 42-gallon trash bag full of water weighs the same when it is in water as the empty trash bag does in air...

    Re: Reciprocity failure

Is it worth mentioning that the reciprocity law has nothing to do with the shape of the H-D curve? The H-D curve could have no straight-line section and the reciprocity law could still hold. What the...

The reciprocity law is a good and very useful law over the range of exposure times for which it holds* - virtually all exposure meters are based on it. Here we are talking about the failure of the...

    Re: Reciprocity failure

If you are sticking to colour neg then there's probably no need to tell the lab anything. I've used Portra 160 (with standard C-41 processing) for exposures of around 20 minutes with no problems....

    Re: Movie Theater Lens

1:2.4 is quite popular, and it can be achieved with a 1.3x squeeze lens, like the Hawk anamorphics, on an Alexa.

Fortunately the curiosity to understand something and the enjoyment of practical experimentation and exploration are not mutually exclusive, though some people seem to think that they are.

That's true, but DoF is not about things that are actually in focus, it's about things that only appear to be in focus: Things that are out of the focused plane, but the degree of blur is so slight...

Strange, because I find it completely intuitive and, as BetterSense points out, quite obvious in practice. It's not necessarily 'how large it's printed', but more like 'how large it is on your...

Re: 6x12 Backs - Horseman or Sinar Zoom or ?

I have the Sinar Zoom 2 and Panorama. I haven't had problems with either, but I haven't used any other backs of that format to compare. It is possible to add Graflok grooves to the Zoom 2.

Re: Keep the Fuji 4x5 back?

I think the FP-3000B is still widely used for technical applications - much more than it is used pictorially - so it stands a reasonably good chance of staying in production. B&H had it on sale for...

  28. Re: Aperture to depth of field normalisation across various formats

There's a lesson for us - despite the method having been mentioned twice beforehand, it was Emmanuel's version that got through.
  29. Re: Aperture to depth of field normalisation across various formats

4x5 has linear dimensions that are half those of 8x10, therefore the equivalent focal length for the same angle of view would be half that of 8x10 - ie from 178 mm on 8x10 to 89 mm (or 90 mm if you...
  30. Re: Aperture to depth of field normalisation across various formats

It is that easy. You can apply the much maligned 'crop factor' to both the focal length and the f-number.

  36. Re: Arca Swiss (110) to Linhof Technika adapter
