Clouds

Chamonix 5×8″, Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 210mm, 5×8″, Adox CHS 25, Rodinal.

The Xenar 210mm f/4.5 is by far my most used lens. I love the way it renders the image (both landscapes and closeups), and the focal length just suits best my vision for 5×8" and 13×18cm formats. If only the image circle was a little larger, then it would be perfect...

In June I shot quite a few films and now have developed them, scanned them and am going to work on them. I think there are some really promising ones to work with... But you all have also pictures that look wonderful as negatives, but are not so perfect when inverted to positive (print)...

Edit: I forgot to say, more than half of my new negatives were shot on Graflex 3x4 SLR (with a roll film back), and as is the general consensus here, it's too small to qualify as Large Format. So I will not post them here, only on my website...

Weathered granite, South Platte River, CO, about 20-30 miles as the crow flies from where Mel took his shot below. This granite is spread throughout a fairly large region. I really like your shot, Mel - the color of these rocks was not as striking and there were no lichens. What caught my eye was the weathering along joints (fractures).

Great images everyone... :)

Here is a terrible old image of a great landmark, that I captured several years ago, which happens to be north and west of my home town. Lake Louise is such a beautiful place during the year, and a place that is so heavily photographed by every visitor this side of the equator; I have only one image. I decided earlier that I would never compete with a million images of the same postcard location, but I wanted one for myself. My old dusty notes reminded me that the temperature was south of minus thirty degrees Celsius that day.

I woke up at 2am yesterday to make the 4 hour drive to the middle of the island. Once there I was greeted to my car telling me it was -7c outside.
First time shooting Velvia 50, and I must say, it's a bit of a drug in 4x5.

I have a box of Velvia 50 QuickLoads. I need to thaw them out. Actually, I wish I were somewhere closer to -7C to use them!

Wonderful photo. Do you process yourself? Or do you have a very speedy lab?

Great granite there as well. Spent my youth climbing in the South Platte and love the shape of the huge boulders and outcrops.

Yes, Velvia is intoxicating. It's not always good to be intoxicated, of course. But it feels so good.

Dear Wayne and Jiri,

The temperature happens to be the only thing I can remember about that day, and the fact that I possibly stood at the edge of the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel's ice rink, to capture the image. If I did not go into the lounge for a few hot drinks after that, I was foolish... :)

Thankfully I'm blessed with pretty good lab here (though they did mix up one of my rolls and give me some slides of some people I'd never met before peering back at me). If you give them something before mid day, it'll be done that same day, even 4x5. Anything after 12 will be done by 11am the following day. They really do run a great service.

Thanks also to Jim, Rick, Sam and Mark. I really was over the moon when I got them back from the lab yesterday. I can't believe I'd spent the last 2 months too nervous to use it.

Well the Velvia bug truly has bitten. I've learnt from this that yes, I can shoot directly into the sun without getting extreme flare with 2 filters so long as it's behind a small amount of cloud, and I need a much, much darker darkcloth so I can place my filters better.
I'm in love with the colours though!

Chris, the darkcloth won't help. Get some black card cut as wide as your filter and a small binder clip, fold the card over so the edge falls directly on the edge of the filter's gradation, clip this onto your filter before inserting into your holder, stop the lens down to your shooting stop and slide the filter into position. This makes it a hell of a lot easier and you won't get that "hey, I used a grad filter" look.

I can't believe I didn't think of this. I've been eyeing up the wrong beast as a fix. Thanks!
Though it is time I upgraded from an old black t shirt (complete with holes) to at least thermal curtians :cool:

I use a post it note on the graduation line of the GND filter. I picked up the trick on this forum, but can't remember from whom. The post it note sticks without leaving any residue on the filter.

Here is a shot I did in Kings Canyon in March of this year. Shot on some old expired t-max 400 knee deep in the snow with my 240 fuji. Print is an Azo/Amidol contact print in 8x10.
