Re: Large Format Landscapes
Stoked about this shot today. It only took me two years walking by this spot constantly to "see" this composition. A good lesson for myself.
Went out with the "ultra-light" kit today. Chamonix 45n1, 90mm f/6.8 Angulon @ f/32, T-Max 100, Acufine:

Easier, and I bet you used less tilt than you thought you needed. ;^)
That's usually my experience for landscapes...
Swings, too.

BTW, that is an incredible riot of mosses, flowers, and grass!

It was essentially a 2-3 minute exposure, the moon was teetering in and out of the clouds and on this shot at least, I was able to get a decent image of the moon. Did some post processing in Photoshop including curves and duotone. I had to crop the image as the right hand side of the negative had a large bush which I failed to see when I was taking the image - it basically destroyed the bottom right of the image thereby forcing me to crop as such. In hindsight, cropping it this way was much more appealing, to me at least.

You sure picked a good spot on the M. Headlands. I've been drooling over 6x12 (anything) for a while....and bam, you did it with this image. Congrats, v. nice....hope to see more.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Yea it's hard to do 6x12 well vertically, this is a "nailed it" though personally I don't like the PS thing as I don't do PS so when I wonder how I could personally get a shot like this and then learn that there was PS work done, I wonder if it's similar to darkroom work or something that would be near impossible without a computer.
This is not anti-PS this is just understand in my own darkroom limits.

Thanks! I had to use tilt 2 or 3 times until now. Probably newer use swings in landscape, can't imagine the landscape which requires it.
It is a good thing since Graflex is so limiting with moves anyway.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Curves probably can be adjusted by a.combination of contrast and dodge/burn/masking in the darkroom.

Shailendra -- terrific image. How did you develop the film? What developer did you use and how did you process it? Thanks

I developed the film at "Photolab" up in Berkeley yesterday. I had a bunch of unprocessed 4x5's and just don't have the bandwidth to process myself at the time being. I believe they process in X-tol, but will check.

Better yet since there are no modern papers which split tone properly, you might try a warm toned paper, and warm tone developer, then short toning in a gold thiocyanate toner to get the warm mid and low tone with cooler highlights. Tone until the moon just turns blue. The blue will recede some as it it washed and dried.

That's currently beyond my knowledge base, I'll get there, first things first, getting the enlarger up and running, I have a 305 repro-claron to hold me over but looking for an EL-Nikkor 300mm as my permanent lens. I don't need the APO version, just the regular.

Thanks, it is a parking place in Iceland. All my flickr photos are geotagged on the map, if you want to know exact location.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks for the very kind comments. I'm still processing film from a few days ago, and will post some more if they turn out OK. Acros is faster than I thought - I've been rating it at EI64, but I'm beginning to think its box speed of EI 100 may work better. What do others think?

I split the difference and rate it at 80. It works out so I haven't changed, but I'm sure 100 would also be fine.

Well, that's a wise choice, since apo el nikkor 300mm is prettymuch unavailable, at any price. If one came on the market I would expect it to fetch north of $10k.

Thanks David - I've still got some more testing to do, but N looks to be around EI 125 (with Tanol), and about 2/3rds of a stop slower with Xtol.
