Ken,
pending a more definitive answer, I'd say it is Mono Lake, CA.

Yes, polarizer then a black mask on the highlight part to balance the exposure then pulling it off slowly up during a long exposure (about 2 sec, on a ~8sec exposure). And yes, as astute observers already picked up on the rise/light fall-offs. Took about 4 brackets and this one turned out alright. contrast/curves/color balance in photoshop :D

Yes, Mono Lake. It's very close to the photograher saturated South Tufa - you'll have to hike a bit south and you'll see some interesting formations :)

Was the polarizer used only as a ND to give you enough time (8 sec. vs. 2) to simulate a DG filter via blocking with a DS? That's brilliant. You used fall, not rise, right, since you were perched above the monoliths?

Here's one of my first shots. I drove up in the mountains of Yamanashi prefecture in Japan to get this picture of Mt. Fuji. There was great morning light, but Mt. Fuji was almost directly in the sun. I used a Zone VI Wista 4X5 with a 210 Wistar lens and an orange filter. It was also my first try at developing my own film, and I think you can see evidence of that. I'm happy enough with it to keep trying though.
