Just checked – yes, it's the penultimate image in the book, page 139, a b/w image from HP5+ film.
In the caption, author Simmons tells the story about how Gordon Hutchings got the shot. I love how he says Hutchings visualized the scene "just after it was discovered," and raced back to his nearby pick-up for his 8x10 camera and 600mm lens.
It leaves one curious about how many times this fantastic scene has been "discovered"!
I think John and Bob have both captured it in very nice light.

Heroique,
Thanks. It's a striking feature in the canyon wall face, so it catches your attention if you happen to see it.

Yup…shortly after I printed the Zion image - which I took in (I think) 1992 - I began to see others. Kind of like when you hear an unfamiliar word spoken - then suddenly its everywhere.
I also had some velvia loaded, and have some nice 4x5 chromes of this - but I do like Heroique’s vertical! At any rate…I used to show this photo to my students and tell them it was a cabbage cut in half - then tell them to bring me back some abstracts!
The Antelope Canyon photo was taken in May of 2012. I’d visited here twenty years earlier and had the place pretty much to myself - but now…whoa! Countless tours with leaders blowing their whistles…trying to keep their groups together. People really getting unpleasant vying for the “perfect” photo. Throwing sand into the light to get the perfect light beam…complete madness. The only way I could shoot was to flatten myself and my tripod legs against a wall, and aim my camera upwards. Still, half my exposures blurred due to others jostling me. ARRGGHH! But know what? This place is still so compelling that I’d return in a heartbeat - no matter the chaos! Here is another…which I need to take back into the dark to deal with that bit of flare.

And heads up: I need to get a bit off my chest (finally!) regarding my L-45A (some of you may remember this), and will likely do this very soon, in either the “show me your camera” section, and/or in “Introductions.” No real commercial intentions at this point…just wanting to share some info. for any of you who may want to know what became of this project. So stay tuned!

Agreed! I'd take a stab at it if I'm ever there...
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Hi John! These pictures are all amazing!
For me as an LF beginner could you tell me, wich lens.and wich aperture you were using, especially in the shots that were made upwards in the antelope canyon? I imagine, that it is quite difficult to focus there from very close to far?
Best regards, Sebastian

Shot with Chamonix 5×8" Large Format camera and Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar 300mm f:5.6 lens using only the front element, resulting in focal length of approximately 420mm. Exposed on 13×18cm sheet of Fomapan 100, developed in Rodinal (R09) 1:50. Cropped to panorama.
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Nice Jiri! Very peaceful. Wonderful tones.
As for crowds and noise. When I was at monument valley I took the 17 mile loop. I got there just at sunrise, wandered down to the valley. The locals were just setting up their vending area. There was very few people. I got down to the valley stopped to shoot. There was absolutely no sound. Perfectly quiet. No people, no machines of any kind, no bugs, no birds, no wind (for once). Just perfect quiet with a warm sun just coming up. Add to this the fact that this was something I have wanted to do for over 30 years. Very spiritual. This was an experience I wish I could photograph completely.
But standing in line with a thousand people was not part of this image. It was not part of the plan for that day and I did not have the entire day to waste on standing in line being shoved.
Despite all that I like John's image very much. I plan to go back and find other canyons. I want to rent a house boat and take a week....but not in January.

I had a guy with a video camera walk in front of me while my shutter was open, back his ass into the front of my lens causing it to move a few inches and then start videoing. A real zoo!
