Christopher I think you are right, maybe something more like this?
My tendency with delicate images like this one, is to start out lower contrast so I don't over power the subject, and sometimes I just don't take it far enough.
I do usually get there after I've lived with a print for awhile and begin to recognize a certain deadness in it.

Clay, I think that does lead the eye better. I find my gaze immediately jumping to the bulk of the trees in the middle ground, and then being pulled to the road that leads the eye to the other elements.

I was approaching this place several times, from various points of view. Never got anything I was happy with... until recently. Shot with a beater Fujinon 125mm f/5.6 on a 4x5" Fomapan 100.
