Re: Large Format Landscapes
This is an open space park near my home called Ute Valley Park. Its a beautiful park, but a difficult place to photograph because it is ringed by large homes and commercial buildings. On this particular day, I finally achieved a photograph that offers a large view of the core of the valley thanks to the low fog.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
This thread is wonderful. I could write praise for every image here. There I was thinking about expressing my admiration for the frozen leafs and that wonderful spot of snow covered plains peeping through in mrladewig's park... then I see Tri Tran's atmospheric forest scene and Jiri's light composition. I don't know what to say more, but I enjoy seeing these excellent pictures every day!

Sascha you are right, I also enjoy coming back to these threads, for inspiration, and for (mental) refreshment...
David, thanks a lot. And you know, I've really been thinking if I should post that one or not. I was not sure, it could have been better... But the light was changing so fast. (That's not to excuse, that's to explain :) ).

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Another one from the New Zealand:
I have to admit that it did require some PS work (the shot was somewhat underexposed) and I am sure there is room for improvement, but well.
A bit of description is here

You’re very close – this is Mount Adams, about 10 miles in the distance.
But if I turned around, I would see Mount St. Helens, about 20 miles away.
I’m sure the same lava channels feed both volcanoes. (Mt. Rainier, too!)

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Great Images everyone... :)
Forgive me if I have shown this image earlier, but this image happens to demonstrate the entrance to one of my favourite hiking areas with Kananaskis Provincial Park, located adjacent to the "Winter Gate," and the eastern entrance to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The creek bed is King Creek, and to the left is King Creek Ridge with Mount Blane directly east of this viewpoint, where Mount Blane rests at 3000m elevation along the Opal Range.
A shallow mountain valley is nestled behind the left foreground ridge, and although it is a short three kilometre hike into the valley as you follow the creek bed, the area can bristle with Grizzly Bears during the summer months, so being cautious, making loud noises, and continuously staying alert happens to be my constant safety valve. I do not take my son along this trail. Several streams merge into King Creek within the valley, draining from each peak, and the weather within the valley can be very temperamental, so carrying additional warm clothing during the mid summer's day is mandatory.
The rock face wall, and the range's exposed sedimentary layers are nearly perpendicular to the valley floor, where the jagged knife-like shapes can add fabulous drama to the image, during the late evening. Unfortunately, I captured this image at or just past high noon, while deciding whether I should introduce my son to the trail, or not...
My judgement got the better of me, so we did not go, and we moved on to hike along the nearby Lower Kananaskis Lake shoreline, where we scoped out a quiet fishing spot.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
This was made during the big snowstorm we had in Northern California last week. I set up the camera in our front yard. We got nearly 1-1/2 feet of snow. The most we've had in the past 20 years is maybe 6 inches. 8x10 wet plate collodion image on aluminum.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Dear Jim;
Beautiful images. The subtle color is easily translatable to BW and that is not often the case in most color work I've seen. Great seeing and brilliant choice of materials and I'm not much of a color fan but if it was done with this much taste I might have to reevaluate my prejudices.

Thank you Denise for the kind words... it's not a color palate that's extremely popular (velvia seems to be the more popular one)

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Preston,
I like the composition and the details found throughout.
My monitor calibration may not be perfect, but there seems to be some excess red in the shadows. Its a problem I've had with Astia scans in the past as well and is easy to correct with either a curve on the red channel reducing red in the shadows or a selective color layer in photoshop.

A couple of others noticed this, as well. It should be easy to fix. Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks Preston. I agree, Mono requires multiple visits to do justice and perhaps get a lucky one :D

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Took this on my Honeymoon 19 years ago. 8x10 Fujichrome on KMV. Didn't even see the phone/power lines in the background then... maybe I'll clone them out. Forget whether it was near Jasper or Banff... probably Jasper.

If I were to guess I'd say he used a well-placed NG on top and then took advantage of the lens fall-off on bottom after using some fall to help keep the verticals straight. Perhaps a blue cooling filter as well. Two filters max, Id say. OR... maybe he just Photoshopped it a bit. :D
