Re: Large Format Landscapes
That is a pretty awesome picture for a near miss. In fact, if I could miss and still get one as good as this one, I'd be tempted to claim it as a happy accident. A metheod that might work would be to meter it just before sunrise, and set the exposure half way between that reading and the one you got for this one.

Last month was no different. My original intention was to shoot the entire morning on film. Alas, I'm still too chicken for that! And so, while I was busy capturing the best light with my digital rig, up comes the sun...out of nowhere! I quickly calculated my exposure and clicked the shutter. While I'm disappointed that the best color occurred just before this image, I'm still happy with the shot. Metering large format film while looking into the sun is not easy! And next time you sneaky sun, I'll be ready! But probably not...

Love that smooth winter sky Steve! More of us need to be out in the snow making photos.

Excellent! Great detail and very strong, graphic comp.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks for the comments/compliments. Erik - a friend just gave me The Negative (paperback) a couple weeks ago, but I don't remember anything like that on the cover! (I'm not at home now, so can't look at it.) It seems like the books in that series have a variety of cover images, depending maybe on hardback vs. paperback or which edition? Or maybe I'm just not that observant... :D
But I think you are referring to his image from the Oceano dunes, which I find interesting in its dissimilarity to the zillion images the Westons made there. If any of you like B&W dune images, the book "Dune" of Edward and Brett's dune images is a must see/have - it is actually almost too much, in terms of the number of stellar images.

Hi jp,, thank you and I agree.. The extreme cold air seems to effects the atmosphere and the color

That's what I guessed. My paperback has Figure 6-1 (Thundercloud over Unicorn Peak) on the cover.

I think that is one of the most contrasty photos I have seen of yours, Ken.

Looking at your photo I can tell that it was a real good talk! :)

Jason was kind enough to take me shooting at one of his amazing locations along the Maine coast. That morning the light was remarkably clear and my photos seem to work best with that kind of interpretation.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
some very lovely photos being shown here!!!!! But jp498, you need a bit more depth of field.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks Kevin; I didn't try to get the last one in depth-of-field focus. I like layers in photos rather than the f64 look.
Pinhole could get it all in focus and might look cool too though. If I ever build a pinhole, this spot isn't far from home, so I'd be back.

I would think that Speed Graphic has a tilting front on it, doesn't it. A bit of tilt would take care of the near far focus.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
My other speed graphic has the tilting front for that purpose. It'd still be tough to get them all in focus at this particular composition.

I like these two, specially the second one for the graphic line pattern. For that effect I do believe the depth of field is spot-on. I also like the first one, but to be honest the first thing I see is not the texture nor the rocks, but the shadow. The shadow has the shape of a lion head with the mouth slightly open. Because it is what stands out for me I then have to make an effort to look for the textures and forms. It works nice though.

Thanks! Unfortunately, a malfunctioning shutter (a spring or screw is loose, making the whole lens vibrate when the shutter is tripped) on my 135mm (my most frequently used lens) ruined most of my pictures from that day.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
I like that a lot RHITMrB! This is a recent one on Ektar 100, should probably find the lighthouse thread and post it in that.

Thanks, there was a huge bank of cloud and the sun went into it so it was pretty much like that though I did use a 3 stop ND filter to balance it out as the highlights were more than +5

I bought Ektar but since 3 years ago i never done color neg on LF, i did 5 sheets only 2 with slide and 2 B&W, the lab i use for color processing told me they don't process color negatives until i send them enough amount such as 15 or 10 minimum, so that i didn't shoot with Ektar i have.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks both. Professional it is a pity that you were unable to use the Ektar you have, I am at the moment finding it a very decent colour neg. PDM, the location is Gribdale in the UK, I had to wait for about 20 mins for the light to come through the clouds for about 10 seconds before it went in and began raining again. Fine British weather.
