The LPOTY winner was IMHO an unnatural looking badly-executed example of HDR (not that I've seen more than a couple that look natural).

Wow guys, that's an honor!
Yeah, persisting the rain really opens up possibilities in my experience ...
once I had a stunning experience of thick wall of rain (think 80 meters) and behind was the brutal sun trying to burn through diffused by this wall ... very strange and interesting light I have never seen before and also not since then ... photographicallly it was over too soon so I didn't manage to get a shot but the experience itself was stunning for me ...
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Certainly is a very nice shot.
Seems kind of bad form ripping on a random unrelated photo that happened to win £10k in a national competition though. Who cares? Why even bring it up? FWIW, I looked up the 2011 winners, some beautiful photos there, with some extremely thoughtful compositions on many. Lot's of inspirational work, and I didn't even have to disparage any of it to make myself feel better!

Lovely perspective...
Re: Large Format Landscapes
This makes me think of Steinbeck for some reason. Very nice as usual.

It does indeed have that look and feel. Compare to the opening shot of "Grapes of Wrath":
