Yes that would help.
This is the thing, the rocks are covered with white powdery mud that has dried in the sun, so the exposure is fine, your water solution would work but it would be very easy to slightly burn them in with a mask.

this is a picture from a project about paths. The shot was taken in Paruzzaro - Italy, and it's a straight scanning from the print, even if the print is less contrasted, more detailed and sharp :-(
