Re: Large Format Landscapes
I don't know what I am doing :)
Graflex Super Speed Graphic with the standard 135mm lens:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2743/...103088c0_b.jpg
I really overestimated the depth of focus in that last shot. I guess I should focus on something a bit further away, and possibly lean the lens forward to get more focus?

Jim,
Such a beautiful image! The long line of trees and that dramatic sky!

I agree - the trees look like an advancing army, with the smoke of battle ahead of them.

Dear David,
Fabulous image and tones... :)
How do you get so damn lucky to capture such a great image, without having my continuous enemy the wind, hanging over your shoulder... ?
Damn.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
I haven't posted an image in a while. Here's something I've been holding onto for a couple of years, haven't printed it yet but am considering adding it to my catalog. I hope it's not too small here....

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Gentlemen,
Thank you for your kind comments... :)
The wind was howling when I captured this image, because a cold front was quickly marching through the area, which caused me just a bit of grief, but I managed to stumble upon a couple of interesting images that day. Speaking about an advancing army, I must go out and assist my young son find materials to build a "Rat Trap Catapult..." this weekend for his science class that happens to be due on Monday, and where I must try to find a rat trap somewhere in the "rat free" Province of Alberta.
I have short circuits written all over this weekend, when it comes to being in the mountains with Alex.
Go figure...

I'd like to see pictures of the contraption when it's built, Jim. :)
Here is one from this morning - more testing of TMY-2, and a first chance to use my new Rodenstock Grandagon-N 75mm.

I was going to mention that as well. Those greens really jump off the screen.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Nice shot. I love the lighting and how the one foreground tree creates a mindset to follow the curve of the path. If that tree had had the same straight trunk as the others, I'm sure the effect would have been entirely different.

Thanks Sam; my first thoughts were to find a way to avoid the reeds, but I couldn't have cleared them without falling into deep mud or water, so I gave up and decided that they were an essential part of the fabric of the photograph. :)

Re: Large Format Landscapes
I think I'm getting better at the focus thing (tilt helps!) but it's not perfect. I'm just trying to learn how this works :)

I like them. There's a tendency, in both photography and life, to get upset over what is perceived as "clutter", but that clutter is often an integral part of things. I like the inclusion of it in landscapes; nature is not tidy.
(I also dislike my landlords' weed whacker... always chopping down the morning glories. "Weeds" they call 'em.)

Re: Large Format Landscapes
A chilly, lonely morning on the Olympic Peninsula (Washington state) – spring 2009.
These are worn-down remains of rain forest trees. They toppled into Olympic rivers, which carried them into the Pacific. Then rough seas ripped-off their bark & branches, and storm waves tossed them back ashore here. A rough life! Come to think of it, those sea stacks on the horizon take quite a beating too.
