Large Format Landscapes

Ok, I knew where it was just not the specifics. I am hoping for a trip within a year. Might hit Shiprock while I am at it. The only question is whether to drive and take the scenic route, from Georgia, or fly into Las Vegas and rent a vehicle.

I drove by Shiprock last week. I'm no expert on the place, but I would guess that unless you have a lot of time to spend there to get to know it, other places in the desert southwest (Zion, Capitol Reef, Arches/Canyonlands) would provide far more varied opportunities for good images. If you want to get a little off the beaten tourist path, try the San Rafael Swell.

In addition, my understanding is that to approach Shiprock one should obtain permission from the Navajo tribal member who has grazing rights where you wish to travel - perhaps Robert can address this. The other places I've suggested are parks and monuments that belong to all of us, so you are free to travel where you wish in those places. They also have amenities like bathrooms, water, emergency services, etc. Not that those are necessary, but one must be prepared to fend entirely for one's self at Shiprock as near as I can tell.

I have traveled through the area but long before I was LF'ing. I want to go back and hit those spots I where could not spend much time. Got run out of Dead Horse Point by rain which chased me south all the way to Tucson before turning back east.

If you have the time, I vote for the scenic route from Georgia. It's a hassle to fly with large format IMO. If you drive you can load the car with as much crap as you want and you might find some nice stuff to photograph along the way to your destination. As you're aware, this whole area is full of potential, you may find yourself in Nowhereville, NM and not want to go any further for photo opportunities... If you need any information with areas I'm familiar with, I'd be happy to help.

A job anywhere in the area would be nice. That way I wouldn't have to drive 3 days just to get there. ;)
