Both are excellent but the first one really grabs you. The beautiful keyhole to the sky above the broken snag is so sweet.

Tachihara 4x5, 180mm lens Ilford FP4.
just love the look of this old tree.
A "friend" climbed our Walnut tree and fell out, broke a vertebrae, and sued us for $2.5 million dollars. Settled for $10K and it cost us $19K for lawyers after two years of bullshit. We had to threaten to sue our insurers to cover us and then they cancelled us after the case was resolved.
That's America.

I never understood this type of story. If the property had some kind of hidden danger, like an open well where you could fall into, I would understand a lawsuit. But this "friend" put himself in danger by climbing the tree.
Thanks guys, it kind or reminds me of one of those electron microscope shots of a pollen spore or something.
Cpercy and Harley; thank you both for the kind words

This place always reminded me of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings. Finally got some good light there after visiting several times. All I need now is to build a crumbling cathedral in the background.

Very nice John, I like the palette.

Thanks for looking and the constructive comments. I plan to revisit both the current negative and try to better nail the enlargement with it as well as going back to the site and try to better capture it during the same light conditions. It was a late evening shot with the sun going down quickly and the tops of the aspen being lit. So there was quite a contrast in the light and dark areas of the valley. As a consequence, some portions of the negative are quite thin. I've just gotten back into the darkroom after many years away so I'm still trying to redevelop my techniques and best figure out out to optimize the negative. Maybe split grade printing?

Does anyone know what kind of tree this is? I don't!

Applause also from me. Beautiful image, Jim.
Thanks everyone. I do like the print. Nice light and a wonderful feel to this image.
Thanks bobwysiwyg. However it's not dead even though the uniformed wouldn't think twice for using it for fire wood.
Nope. It's somewhere in the Colorado Plateau and located inside the confines of a “Research” Area which was marked “No Trespassing.” I do think that it is a bristlecone pine but I am not sure. I photographed several, including this one, and all were within a close proximity to each other.

Jim, a very beautiful image! Congrats!
