"No, it's a lens property - how many wavelengths it was designed it to focus simultaneously. "
Exactly, and I suspect that the Apo-Lanthar would give very good results in IR, unless of course it has a coating hot spot. Apochromatic lenses are designed so that the light of the visible spectrum, from about 400 nm to 700 nm, ( red, green and blue light) lie together in the same image plan. 720 nm IR is just outside the visible spectrum so generally is the sharpest of the true IR bandwidths and should in theory work well with any Apo lens designed for visible light. IR wavelengths longer than 900 nm are well outside the optimum wavelength of most lenses, and of course show the highest degree of lens aberration. However, several of my modern Zeiss lenses for the Sony a7r cameras give excellent results in IR, unless of course they have IR hot spots. Of these the best one I own is the 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss/Sony, and it works equally well in visible as in IR.
Sandy
Out in the smoke earlier today - not sure I even need IR for the surreal in conditions like this! (Yes, I had a respirator on.)

Couple of recent shots from nearby, one is a kudzo rich scenes from near Bat Cave, NC. The other a view of Chimney Rock. Kudzu is very impressive in SC and NC this year, due to warm temperatures and lots of rain. Can grown as much or more than a foot a day in August and September with favorable conditions.
Both shots were made with a Sony a7r 2 converted to 720 IR, with a Sony/Zeiss 24-70 mm zoom. Some processing was done in Camera Raw.

That kudzo sure does grow! I like the first image Sandy. For the second, I really want to take a chain saw to the tree in the center! I wish there were a few rocky hills where I live, but then it would not be the 'low country'.

Too hot to venture far today, so I stayed in the neighbourhood.
