I'm with Mars, leave it in. I'm no expert in composition and image design, but I think it adds a little tension and also balances the somewhat heavier background on the right. By the way, are you familiar with your fellow Texan David H. Gibson? He does primarily panoramic B&W, very nice. He has a website. You can also pick up a used copy of his book Canyonlands Vision for a pretty reasonable price. Like any book, it has a few sub-par images, but a lot of very nice ones as well. You can preview most of it by going to the Southeast Utah gallery at his web page.
