Good Lord, Paul – were you not an LF forum member when you were experiencing this flying saucer nightmare? ;^)
Just so newer members know, there are too many threads and posts to count about how to manage the light-stability (and MG paper) issues of Arista and Omegalite diffusion heads and tubes. Some solutions complex, some easy, a few downright brilliant.
The flying saucer, pros and cons, is one of my most beloved darkroom items. For many negatives, the diffusion is a winning antidote to the Callier effect of my (also beloved) D2v variable condenser head.
Once during a cocktail party (after one glass too many of Chateau Mouton Rothschild), I brought out my Omegalite on a long extension, held it up with its light on, and made it look like a flying saucer had come in through the living room window – “Swoosh!” The Omegalite is an instant antidote to neighborhod gossip, and probably the cause of some!
