Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
There are many kinds of stainless. The correct kinds are not affected by typical darkroom chemicals. Platinum or Palladium printing is a different matter. But glass is NOT inert to just everything. When in doubt, consult a compatibility chart in a chemical supply house catalog or website.

Stainless Steel does not contain any steel (iron).
316 stainless is
% Cr % Ni % C % Mn % Si % P % S % N Other
16–18 10–14 0.08 2 0.75 0.045 0.03 0.10 2.0–3.0 Mo

Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
Fun fact of the day!
Edited to add: Perhaps very little steel alloy content, anyway -- there is a reason one can not use magnets on SS clad refridgerators!

Your percentages don’t add up to anything near 100%, so if not steel/iron then what? Also if there’s no steel, the why is it called “stainless steel “? And for the matter why does stainless steel stainless steel rust a bit when left out in the elements?

Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
How could anyone believe that 316 stainless doesn't contain steel/ iron is beyond me...
Other critical fabrication issue is to make sure that the welds are done with the correct filler metal otherwise you can get corrosion problems etc.
Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
I once had a handbook at work listing the composition of just stainless and bronze alloys. It was 200 pages long. Some of my own stainless trays were commercially used for over half a century in a big dye transfer lab. They look new. There are miles and miles of time-tested information on this subject. There are people who make their living welding stainless; they know what kind to use for what. We sold stainless fasteners and liners to both the military and for severe industrial applications. They knew what to specify. Likewise, a company like Kreonite or California Stainless knew what to use in darkrooms and photo labs. A restaurant supply does not; there you need to do your own homework first.
Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
Which is why the local store can't sell the stainless steel fridges-the housewives don't want them because you can't leave messages and pictures on them

Once acquired a set of SS trays from a restaurant/kitchen supply store. They lasted less than a year with daily (Mon-Fri) use.
Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
This is an aside for gearheads. All SS IS not the same.
I bought and fabricated miles of Stainless Steel exhaust tubing for Dyno test engines. Expensive for the best.
Here's a short description of their Stainless Steels. MIL Spec may be less than ASTM. Varies.

Re: Sources for Stainless Trays?
Had to get a new GE fridge even though I knew GE is junk because of the narrow space allowing a door opening one direction only. The door is cheap stainless, the sides faux stainless nickel plate to allow magnet use. Some "stainless" kitchen sinks will tarnish in less than half an hour with lemon juice or acidic ketchup left on em. If the price is too good to be true ...
