Return to Cyanotype
Began working on a new project this week featuring cyanotypes. This image was printed on Bergger Cot 160 coated using the traditional cyanotype formula. Although I've printed on Cot 320 in the past, this is my first print on the 160 version. It's a light paper that holds up well in the wash and exhibits a pronounced curl upon drying. I give it a preliminary grade of an "A" with Hahn Simi-e, Arches Light, and Cranes Cover to go.

Re: Return to Cyanotype
The print darkened (oxidized) a little last night and looks somewhat better today:
The whites stayed white except maybe where there was a shadow however several small white dots appeared in the sky. The can be spotted out of course. The paper has a rough, almost sandpaper like, feel to it. I'm looking forward to printing this negative on the other papers using both the traditional cyanotype formula and Mike Ware's New Cyanotype formula. The series will be printed with the best formula/paper combo. BTW, 810 Acros negative with shutter-mounted 610mm Apo Nikkor.

Re: Return to Cyanotype
Looking good, always enjoyed cyanotypes. The "Hahn Simi-e" - is it perhaps Hahnemühle Sumi-e or is it something else?

Re: Return to Cyanotype
Yes, Hahnemühle Sumi-e - a typing error.

Re: Return to Cyanotype
Well I tried Arches Platine Light (145 gsm), with a different negative I admit, but it is not as good as the cot 160. In addition the Arches curled up significantly as of today whereas the cot has only a mild curve and is mostly flat. I also tried both papers for albumin prints and again the cot 160 was superior. However both gave muddy looking prints and both exhibit a significant curl as of today. Both papers were flattened under heavy books prior to sensitizing with silver nitrate but the cot 160 was especially difficult when placing the negative on top due to the pronounced curl. I floated both in the albumin for 3 minutes and it may be that 3 minutes it too long considering the paper weight. Previously I had floated 300gsm Hahn Platinum Rag for 3 minutes and the paper stayed mostly flat like the 160 cot with cyanotype. Maybe 1.5 minutes with the lighter paper.
