Re: The Setup and the Shot
Cameron: I'm curious about how you focus (not meant to sound as dumb at that!) In #8 it looks like you pre-focus on the figurine on the chair, and have enough DOF that when a human subject sits down, he or she will be in focus? Or do you re-focus on each subject, and then ask them not to move forwards or backwards? (In your other set-up shots, you show only the chair or backdrop.)

Peter, I always assume that any sitter is going to be in a bigger hurry than I am. So, in an effort to minimize the amount of time he or she needs to sit there while I fuss with the setup, I try to establish the framing and focus as much as possible before I call anyone over. Of course, I still make the final adjustments looking through the ground glass after a subject enters a frame, but that preparation usually means that this final step is usually over in a matter of seconds. If I’m shooting a narrow depth of field, especially if the person isn’t sitting down, I generally check the focus between each shot.

Thank you.
You might notice that even though the road is paved, there are no power lines or poles. It's getting hard to find roads like that even in rural Massachusetts.
