Early autumn before deep snows arrive, North Cascades, Wash. state.
The larches are turning yellow before losing their needles. By November, all these trees will be naked and look dead, forbidding, and bleak. But when the needles grow back green in the spring, it's a delightful resurrection.

The 9:00 a.m. shadows on the high rocky spires – thanks to reflected light – fell on zone 4, while the deepest shadows on the opposite shore didn't fare as well, zone 3.
