I like both images. I initially like the guitar one first. Then I decided I liked the simple portrait better. I know, I'm supposed to go with my initial gut instinct, but it wasn't that simple this time.
If it's going to be on an album cover, you pretty well know he's a musician. The guitar isn't necessary. It's intense and evocative and personal, sorta like you hope the music will be.
For PR photos, the 2nd photo might be preferable.

I know y'all are sick of pictures of my son, but it's one of my favorite things, and is something he and I have always shared. Especially important to me as he enters his teens.
Anyway, summer's waning.

I think your photos of him are excellent ++.
They look very natural and personal - and are beautifully lit and composed.
No gimmicks, just quality.

+1
I love taking photos of my wife and daughter, and never tire of it; since they left to visit family in Hungary, I've been counting the days until their return.
And eating a lot of frozen pizza.:)

Practice makes perfect, and you're getting real good at photographing your son. I photography my daughters a lot too, and while I don't want them to grow up too fast, I look forward to when they can sit still like your son.

har har har! love it!
He may be "just" the client and lack the photographer's knowledge and vision but for a commissioned work his word has to go, whether the photographer agrees or not.
If I hired someone else to photograph me for a commercial project I'd get the one I preferred or they'd get fired and I'd hire someone else.
Money talks, maybe sad but true.
In this case I'm with the other folks who say it at least may not be a mistake. Both are great. I'd be proud he chose either and used it as the cover.
