Hi Miles.
Thanks for your kind words.
Your image is lovely. It has something of the haunting 'thereness' of daguerrotypes. Natural light?

Okay, so I am still behind in scanning and setting up my new website, but I thought I should post another image of what I am working on currently:
http://www.allgstudio.com/View_Camer...on_Moat_08.jpg
This was shot with a 135mm Symmar-S, in proper Copal 0 shutter . . . unlike my earlier post using the ancient HB&H without shutter. This was also strobed.
Ciao!

Gordon, she looks great but why did you cut off the top of the instrument? I think the highlight on the instrument is a stop or so too hot as well. What do you think?

I like your work Gordon. I think the top of the instrument was cut off to better position the model in the photograph though there is enough white space on the right or her to include the white space above her and the top of the instrument. This thread continues to blow me away and as soon as I get my 5x7 rig together (holders on their way) I want to get back to doing some portrait work and expose myself for some critique by those who are truly qualified.
I have already decided to re-scan this one. Noticed a few bubbles from the oil still in some areas, on the much higher resolution version (82 MB file). The highlight is more of an issue with the scanner and then trying to display in a web browser . . . definitely not optimized.
Composition . . . basically I did not worry about trying to get everything contained within the frame. In fact, as a printed item, and the one that will go onto my new website, it will be more cut off. I do the same thing on my paintings and drawing, basically as leading the eye off the canvas, though also the idea that the minds eye will fill in any missing details. Out of this series with this talent, there are a few that include the entire bass, but I like this one more . . . and so does she.
What struck me the most of this one over the other images I did of her was the ways the curves of her body play off the curves of the bass. There is a nice rhythm there that appealed to me. Anyway, I have two other shots of her that will go into my portfolio, so hopefully within a week or so all of you can see a bit more . . . if you like. Oh . . . she also plays that, so it's not simply a prop.
Ciao!

I did a series of portraits when I lived just south of Santa Cruz. This is a friend of mine who now lives in Mexico City. Canham 5x7, some lens, some film, some fun. Note that web/jpeg format makes the left side backdrop darker then it is in print and .tiff format.

Here is another, a fairly ordinary image except for her eyes. This model was pretty amazing. I have some other images where she brought a lot of character to the images. Canham 5x7, some lens, some film, some fun.

Very nice Joe.
Here is a self portrait: 300 seconds (counted in my head of course) 3:20am, Los Gatos, Wista 4x5, some lens, some film, some fun. The film slipped down during the exposure at about 40-75 seconds or so. I am trying to keep as still as possible but breathing no matter how composed still involves motion in the body most notably in my head. It was a toss-up to put this in the thread on shadows or the this thread. The shadow content is likely more interesting then the portrait itself.
