Recently, I made a lens for a customer in Amsterdam, here's what he sent me...

125mm f/2.3 Wollaston Meniscus lens
4x5 Intrepid camera, f:11, Ilford FP4, (no exposure time or filter data was recorded
The ground glass was focused just to the right of the bridge pylon.
Spherical aberration, typical of the uncorrected meniscus lens is evident in the right half of the photo.
By emphasizing the central part of a photo, the Wollaston Meniscus is a useful tool for the portrait Photographer

I used a DIY made miniscus lens, 270mm and used f/8
Michael Neumuller explained in his book " Praxis der Weichzeichnung" one of the best books about soft focus lenses, why round apertures are not the best choice for menicus lenses.
The star form style is much better and f/8 is the perfect f-stop for this lenses.
Ok, I tested it, I made a waterhouse stop with the aperture value f/8 in the recommended style.
The other point is to avoit the focus shift, Neumüller wrote a yellow or yellow/green filter makes the correction of the focus shift obsolet, when a colour sensitive film is in use.
I used a yellow/green filter -1EV and the Fuji UM-MA xray film, orthochromatic, in Kodak HC 110, 1+39
It works perfect, the focus is exactly were I set it on the ground glass. No focus shift because the blue and violet light were complete cutted out.
The meniscus lens is out of a Zeiss lithography lens, it is apherical and has a diameter of 120mm (4 7/8") Made of quarz glass, fused silica.
I illuminated the setup with three LED lamps.

Neat, Arri. I'd never heard that about the aperture shape. Did the filter lead to less of a soft focus effect?
