Re: Large Format Landscapes
Finally, after more than 5 attempts i did it! This point is very swept by the wind and its very difficult to find fog here. And it’s especially difficult to grab this scene on large format camera..

Zemst (Belgium) near the Zenne river. Foma 400 4x5, Fuji W 125/5.6, 1/60, f/19, HC110. We don't have anything else than dull grey overcast days now. Lucky if it doesn't rain.

Randy, Bill, Consummate, Panoral, thank you very much. I saw this scene from the road and my jaw dropped. Nothing "special" about the location (except it's in Yosemite, so there is that...), but the light and shadows just called out to me.

Mohammed, I really, really like this composition! Reminds me of Ansel Adam's photographs in the Albany Hills and Panamints in California. Maybe that's why!

Thanks. Waited for the sun to pop out, which it did for less than a minute. Was hoping for more of a sunstar on the sun but I guess it was a bit too diffused from the clouds.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Decided to give the Verito another try - had some issues with the lensboard I was using and had light leaks, and finally modded it and found a new retaining ring that fit. Anyway, just trying out some soft-focus landscape which I think might be interesting in some situations.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Bryan, even though Ansel Adams in his youth, as did other to-be-famous photographers, make some fuzzygraphs, I prefer the second photo. The horizontal format helped the composition, too.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Yeah, the focal length of the Verito makes it difficult for me to get the wide-angle images I usually gravitate towards. I like the way the Verito rendered the background, sunlit foliage, but not so much the water in the foreground, which is probably a product of the light cutting across the scene. I shot a color image of this though that I am interested in seeing. From what little I've done I am liking the look of color soft-focus more than b&w.
I also shot an image in more diffuse, flat light and it looks terrible with the soft focus. There's gotta be highlights or contrast for the soft-focus to work, for me.
Here's one more image with the Verito, of the sunset light behind some bare trees. I suppose this really just needed clouds:

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Bryan, of the Verito images, I like the second one. It seems to work better with the focal length.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks for the input chassis...definitely need to push some more film through this lens to see what I come up with or if it suits my style.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
The first verito is kinda exciting in texture, but it is too complex/detailed to make a soft focus scene. Some of those roots could have made a soft focus photo as it becomes more about composition than detail. Using the long focal length and wide-ish aperture of the verito also lends kindly to using distance as a separator of objects in the photo by means of focus. It will have more DOF than a sharp lens of that length, but you can still use DOF to isolate subject matter. Highlights that are out of focus will also be less realistic which can be good.

Another scene that reminds me of home...:) If it's not too much trouble, I'd be interested in your "liner notes" on this one--especially the weather conditions. Yesterday I was banging around streamside here on the Tennessee side of the GSMNP with a P67 loaded with Acros and a light snow coming down, so I found myself wondering how essential directional light is to a good B/W landscape. Can the "underexpose/N+1" approach get you where you need to be, at least tonally, or does the day turn into a scouting mission at that point?
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
I've been doing a lot of N+1 developing lately...it's either been completely overcast or there's not a cloud in the sky (which means yucky light pretty much 95% of the day). Are you spot metering? Usually on scenes like the above I find the darkest area I want to see some tone in at Zone II or III, and then the bright areas are around Zone VI. So the N+1 developing gets me to where I need to go. When I shoot my Pentax 67 I get the same effect by underexposing in the camera. This scene was in the early morning with overcast sky, and probably could have done with a bit more developing. Scanning it, I did a curve adjustment to get more contrast - so probably need a #3 or 4 filter in the darkroom when I make a print, or longer development.

Thanks for the detailed reply--we've been pretty much in the same boat, so I think I'll develop this roll +1 just to see. (I'm used to mercurial weather that close to Clingman's Dome, but yesterday took the cake--literally three minutes of blue sky with the hoar frost coated ridgetops blinding white, then back to being socked in for the rest of the day...:))
