Thanks Jardel,
Yes i scan my plates as color. It's not really black and white, but it has a "coffe-cream" color.
And that i would like to keep in my scans'

Reminds me of the end of "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. Taken yesterday at our neighborhood park.

Looking good, Frank. I love the attitude that your photographs always possess, though this one has a TON of attitude to spare. Great!

Wet plate and brass lens predilections are fetishes and everyone has their own...

I like the wet plates and old lens look AND Frank's stuff. I either have broad ranging tastes or I'm just not discriminating, maybe both. ;)

Re: August 2012 Portraits
For sure, there is plenty to love about both styles and everything in between. I think Frank was just having fun anyways, maybe :P

I'm afraid this one has slipped down into the uncanny valley, for me. I had to look hard to see if I could tell if she was a real person, or a mannequin. It could go either way. It's either a mannequin doing a good job of imitating a person, or a person doing a good job of imitating a mannequin. And a nice plate, but that seems rather beside the point.

Re: August 2012 Portraits
Thanks so much guys, I've only been doing this about 3 months so still trying to put all the pieces together for consistent results. She's definitely real. When I saw the plate, I thought she looked like one of the beautiful women sometimes used in the old horror movies. Like she was from Transylvania or such. Come to find out her grandmother is Romanian and I think that is reflected here. She was super pleased with the plate and just beside herself for being "allowed" to sit for me - looking forward to working with her much more in the future.
Struggling with the lighting for indoor plate making. This was a 30s exposure done with a panel of 6 - 4' black light bulbs, 4 - 300w equivalent CFL bulbs and 2 full power pops of a White Lightning 3200 - thus the freaky catchlights in her eyes. Home made headrest helped keep her still, but as sharp is it is, she could have held still for 5 minutes.

Is your scanner broken, or is it just malfunctioning? Nice pic... although I still find tatooed ladies a bit off-putting. I'm such a prude... and such a bore. :)

Re: August 2012 Portraits
Frank, I like the little girl looking into the camera from the edge of the frame. All eyes on the viewer! Along with the teetering pose, the tattoos, and makeshift setting, it lends a circus-like feel to the image.

Yes, she's very exotic and beautiful, and I like the ambiguity of the image -- I hope I didn't come off as critical. Anything that makes me look long and hard at an image has got to be a good thing!

Alex,
I've never experienced shooting with collodion plates, just shoot with common 4x5 film. Maybe in a near future. Who's the guy on the picture, a friend of yours ? He remember Christ.

What is the wet platers fascination with sculls. Is it in the manual? Gives you certification? :)

Re: August 2012 Portraits
In the North Carolina Mountains you are able to find many places of interest. The Crossnore School founded many years ago for children in need is such a place. On my last trip to Crossnore I visited the weave room at the school. Since I spend my working life selling looms to textile mills in the USA, this was a very good place for me to visit. The young weaver was very nice to allow me to make her photograph.
Camera -- Speed Graflex
Lens – Heliar at F4.5 for 1/30 with rear shutter
Film – Ilford HP-4 pushed to ASA 400
Processed in HC-110 50/1 for 14 minutes in Beseler Drum

My Three Boys (15 yrs old)
Luffenholtz Beach, CA
Scanned 11x14 contact print. I believe the paper is Luminos Classic Charcoal R paper, selenium toned.
270mm lens
FP4+
About a two-second exposure (lens cap as shutter) -- Boys' heads are not too sharp due to longish exposure.

Please excuse my editing, I hope you don't mind. A little cropping changes the environment and gives it more of an action-oriented, sci-fi look.

How old, 1925? This shot might have looked futuristic in the 20s, but now it looks like........the 20s. Very nice, all the same.
