Ahh... back in the mid '70s at university we used Kodak glass plates to overcome the whole flatness thing. 103aF, IIIaJ mostly. I'll bet they're long gone. Haven't thought about this for years.

I do remember the professors and grad students being all worked up about getting their first CCD...a 512 element linear device that was going into a spectrograph. The next year they got a 1024 pixel device.
