Wanderlust 4x5 P&S

Today, I learned that there is such a thing as International Pinhole Day. I never knew. There should be an International Film Day, a day dedicated to getting people to shoot film, preferably people who don't usually shoot film.

For a while, I've wanted to form a print club in NYC in order to show my own prints and look at other people's work. Darkroom prints only. But, I suppose it will be too much work to organize and run. I have been taking classes at ICP in order to have this experience.

No, you can't have my spot, spots, actually. I'm in two lines, the 90 and the 65 line. 15% is not enough incentive, even 100% would not do it. I suppose a $500 offer would give me pause.

Yeah, Think it's in April. I actually exposed a frame on that day last year but didn't follow through. One of my plans this year is to learn how to scan and post images online. I really am a computer dummy but if I want to share ideas and such then if someone asks for visual information I'd like to be able to do it.

I think Ben said that Justin is the 'pinhole wizard' of the two (so to speak). I was astounded by the clarity of the pinhole pictures they posted on one of the updates. Although I have a 90 Angulon that bonus pinhole cap is something I definitely will use when I get the camera.

April 26th to be exact. http://pinholeday.org Participated a few years back and it was a lot of fun. Might have to do it again this year.

I learned of IPD photo day by accident on a web search a couple years ago. I had also seen some hand built pinhole camera that were facinating, made of all maner of materials some highly crafted and beautiful. It seemed like great fun and an excuse to get out to shoot some film. Unfortunately I didn't get or make a pinhole camera and did'nt participate in IPD. After I saw the results of the days shooting, lterally thousands of photos, I was dissapointed that I didn't try harder to join in. I'm going to try harder this year , (don't listen to Yoda who said to Luke, "There is no trying only doing"). I haven't used up all my excuses yet.

At the Art Intersection where I rent darkroom space, they also have classes supporting special events like the IPD. One, I haven't take yet, is to build your own pinhole camera for the IPD event. It's taught by a retired university photography instructor. The end result is a modest but very effective 4x5" filmholder fixed focal length box camera with a precisley ground aperature "hole". A friend took the class and said he learned a lot and was going to build a similar one out of higher quality materials. That might be a next step for me as well - now that I know a lot more about what it takes to make a quality pecision LF camera that can be used with either lenses or a pinhole. I encourage everyone to take a look at some pinhole photos you won't believe much of what you'll see. Start with the web address posted by Roger Thoms

Wondering if a plastic helical would work better with grease, or not?

I wrote and suggested Door-Ease to them but didn't get a response. It's something we use in violin bow work, a really slippery harmless stuff, and I had tried it on the really sticky-awful zoom helical on my fake Nikon zoom lens coffee mug and it really did the job. When I get my camera, with or without their blessings, I'll probably put a dab on the helical.

Trouble is, when the helical is racked out, the threads are exposed so that you would get grease on your hands and other stuff.

The silence from Ben is unnerving. Did the helical not pass the boiling test? And, if so what happens next? You would think if it was good news they would be eager to share it, at least on this forum to the faithful.

I was thinking more like a thick, sticky type of grease to offer some damping type of action.

Or maybe run it in with some 600-grit Clover compound. :-)

I would think that any lubricant such as oil, grease, etc. would attract dirt in an open helical. Plastic or not that cannot be good.

A dry lubricant such as graphite may work but that could be messy. A dry film lubricant such as DuPont DryFilm would probably be useful in this case and I know there are some newer forms of gun lubricants or bicycle chain lubes that go on wet but leave a dry coating of teflon when the solvent evaporates. Whether or not this is compatible with the parts for the Travelwide is unknown though.

I personally would avoid dry, sticky gels or greases.
