There was talk earlier of additional voluntary funding by stakeholders to bring the project forward. What about manufacturing the helical like the prototype with 3D printing? So maybe the camera cost is what has already been paid, and the helical is an additional $75-$100. folks were willing to pony up about that much additional before.

They have already said they would accept no additional funding for this project. After this ordeal is past they probably do not want to even hear the term "Kickstarter" for a period of time. Although I'm interested in what other ideas they have for photography related items I hope they will take the time to decompress for several months.
Kickstarter has nothing to do with it. Production, pre planing and manufacturing are complex things. Some parts of this venture were thought out well, others less so. Finding out in hindsight that various things do or do not work only means more work should have been done before, as now it is too late, and too expensive.
If this were a private venture (and i doubt such a thing would have anywhere near the exposure this had) the money would still have to come from somewhere.
My comment was not implying that Kickstarter was to blame. I was commenting on the stress level these two lads must be feeling by now, as in their friends and acquaintances asking "Say, how's that Kickstarter project going?". However it is a good object lesson for bright young inventors who want to use that platform for capital. Get your ducks in a row. Murphy's Law is ruthless.Quote:

I would think that those, who in previous posts, endorsed the idea of just paying more to keep the project alive would. I had thought that each 3-D printed part could be made for a one-off price more or less like "on-de,amd printing" of a self published book. I have been informed that the 3-D printed parts are not light tight, so as in the old SNL skit . . ."never mind."Quote:

We recently visited our mold shop, and we have an update that will go out pretty soon (maybe January 1st or 2nd). It's all good news! We're stress testing the parts now to determine the perfect size. An update would have gone out right after our trip on the 22nd, but Christmas happened.
There's a chance that 3D printing could work for the helical—if we tweaked it to be optimized for FDM, which can be light-tight. If you already had a 3D printer, it might make sense... Otherwise, it would be expensive.
