I think you're right. The clean converging lines of the bridge and its reflection are interrupted by the spindly bushes which compete for the viewer's attention. (Just my two cents.) But hey, it happens. I'd like to say that all of my shots come out how I hope they will, but I'd be lying. At least you learn this way.
How do you like the 47mm XL? That is one of those lenses I've always wanted to own.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
It's awesome, but it's hard to focus, hard to compose, and just plain hard to use. It doesn't help that there isn't a lot of open terrain here. I need to practice more with it. Also, I need to figure out a way to use a GND.

Beautiful image, was this without the use of a graduated filter as I heard that Portra 400 has wide exposure lattitude?
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Wow, wonderful photo AbsolutelyN! The sense of light is just fantastic. Curious, also, about how it was handled. I'd like to try pushing Portra 400 like that.

Really nice photo. I like the blurred movement of the foreground foliage. Good that you went ahead and made the exposure despite the wind. It adds drama to the bottom, to match the drama of the sun and clouds on the top.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks. I used a polariser to slow the shutter to around a 1/4 second to capture the movement in the foreground, it may also have had a centre filter. The image is unfiltered regarding graduated filters. I'd say Portra has 16 to 18 stops of latitude based on my own basic tests with 35mm film. It can get grainy in the over exposed areas so use of a 1 stop grad can help.

One more, same moorland location. Also taken on Portra 400NC but converted to b/w, 47mm XL.

gutsy to use velvia in a situation like that. bravo. it really captured the atmosphere in a very suggestive way.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thank you! I'm curious what you mean by atypical. Not that I disagree, I just didn't really think of it that way. It is, after all, a sunrise photo.
As an aside, I saw this on the way to an orchestra gig and slammed on my brakes, trespassing onto private property to snag this shot. Way back in March I think actually, only now getting a batch of E6 done.

Re: Large Format Landscapes
I was probably referring to the color palette. Not so much vivid greens, reds, and blues as typical of a color landscape. More of a subdued brownish earthy feeling.
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Ah, I see, cool. I have to admit that wasn't intentional, but that's just how the landscape looked. There's not a lot of vivid color here in the deep south.

Here's an older shot. If I recall I used my 135/5.6 APO Sironar-S and Velvia.

Beautiful I love the slight transparency to the water in the foreground, and the colours are lovely.

Sorry about that..
Some where near the Seattle area, within 2 hours of it. This was my first outing with this camera. I didn't take many notes, even though I had an iPad with me. ;( I was shooting along with my buddy. He was snapping away with Digital, and at times, it was difficult to concentrate.
Next trip out to shoot like this, I'll document shots via the iPad with text and images, so I'll know where I was, time of day, etc...
Not sure where we went to be honest. I was riding along with a buddy of mine, and he took me around for 4 days. I shot 4x5 and 120 b/w, as well as 4x5 Velvia.

PFILTZ
I really like it too, but I think it would benefit just a bit from burning in the sky a little bit to make it look just a bit more dramatic.

Thank you for the kind comments everyone.
Badlands are some my favorite places and there are so many of them each with a unique character.
For me growing up in the lush vegetation of Kansas being in badlands is totally alien, almost as good as going to the moon.
There is something primal about the harshness of these places while at the same time they exhibit some of the most subtle beauty.
I suppose people who have grown up in desert environments must feel the same sense of strangeness when they visit my environment.
I think I must have been a lizard in a previous life.

Got me a scanner, at last.
First scan from a shot done at the APUG get together in Vrå years back. Sorry for the low quality. Its a crappy shot and crappy scan so I can show some improvement in technique etc. fast :D
Best regards

Re: Large Format Landscapes
Nice take Søren. I like the selective focus you did (front swing?). Do you remember what lens you used?
-
Re: Large Format Landscapes
Thanks Ramiro
I think it was the 240mm(on 13X18cm, Foma 100ISO). Must have been cause the 150 probably won't cover with that amount of swing.
Best regards
