Most of humanity has devolved into a level below that of caveman, or perhaps turnip. We may have technology, and fancy toys, but in the end, most of humanity is more then happy to cut your throat if it will mean another meal for them.
The era of nice people really never happened, except in small circles that got attention. For example look at Japan and Korea, how the amount of bull crap social customs and norms to follow..

Getting back to topic, photography is about catching the light in the world. There will always be people who want to catch the light. There will always be light.

With these AI images coming in by hordes, 'real' photography will becoming more a niche and let's hope it will survive as it did with the first digital tsunami...
One important advantage is that with the 'real' photography, we have still the negative as a camera original to show what was done/seen/shot in reality.
The negative will become a kind of 'proof of authenticity', as far as photography as such is authentic.

it is easy as pie to make a digital negative ... why can't an AI image be authentic ?

Well, John - it can't be an "authentic" photograph, because AI-generated content has nothing to do with photography!

Many critters like me have photographic memory. Mine is not perfect but surprises me daily
I also can imagine or movie a running engine on the inside
Implants are coming. We already made wired vision for at least one blind male.
He can now catch a ball
Maybe we Soon kiss and SEE!
No prints needed

an AI image can never be authentic. NEVER.. its impossible as AI generated images are never capable of having authenticity. As everythign about them is fake.
My favorite standby for the argument..
Once upon a time, if a person wanted to take a photograph of a friend in a green shirt, they had to have the friend put the green shirt on.
IN the digital era, they merely needed to have a photo of their friend in a shirt, and then have some freetime to use Photoshop control bars to change the color of the shirt to green.
With the world of AI imaging programs, they need to have a photo of their friend on the hard drive, and a picture of a green shirt. And merely tell the program they want a photo of their friend in a green shirt.

Well it's in the name, in the first word actually: 'Artificial' Intelligence, and I was always told that artificial wasn't 'real' or 'genuine', it was 'ersatz'.
But I fear that what is artificial will become genuine (and perhaps vice versa).
And, a digital negative, as good, genius and no matter how analogous it may be created (lazer exposed film), it will always show it's origine as there was no camera involved, and camera's, and lenses, how good they are, always have inherent faults, the same goes for the film emulsion, and the operator too.
Many can recognise the image's character taken wit a Super-Angulon or a Nikon WA, not to mention the emulsion on which it was shot (yes, i know that can be mimicked too, but...).
And, at least nowadays, I don't think (hope) that AI can mimic 'character', yet.
And then, there will always be the 'human factor', making mistakes, being (hyper-)sensitive, compassionate, forgiving, stupid, driven, quirky, unpredictable, surprising, variable, kind-hearted, generous, greedy, distorted, mad, sweet, super intelligent, gullible... How to 'artifice' that?
And, last but not least, there is 'fingerspitzengefühl' and nothing can beat that!
But, please, don't misinterpret my words, I don't reject progress at all, AI has surely it's advantages, no doubt at all, but, again, it's the human factor controlling it, or is it vice versa...
