Ilex Acme Synchro #3 shutter disassembly
Hello again helpful LFs,
I'm sure only one or two recall my posts of a few months ago. I had to go through RT chemo, but I'm alive and back, albeit worse for wear and tear.
I'm going through my gear again and want to use my Schneider K 300mm tele, in it's Acme Synchro #3. Poor shutter needs some love.
I already did the swish and pray but the flash sync no work and the slow speeds are way off.
I want to open it up.
Here's the problem: apparently for non standard lenses, there are adapter rings that go between the lens barrel and the shutter. Mine has a bigger OD than the hole(s) in the black speed/fstop indicator plate. It bevels to the appropriate OD to allow it to fit.
I need to remove it. Tried unscrewing with increasing force. Ended up using lots of force and heat and penetrating oil. Nope.
Who knows how these adapters attach to the shutter?
I hope the attached pics help. Attachment 249340Attachment 249341Attachment 249342Attachment 249343

Normally, adapters are just screwed in, but your adapter may have been glued in, galled, or cross-threaded.
You might try a strap wrench, but be careful because the 'pivot' can bend the adapter.
A more 'medieval' approach would be to put a rubber band around the adapter, tighten a screw-type hose clamp over the rubber band, and gently tap the hose clamp adjuster counter-clockwise with a small hammer to loosen.
Or...(best answer)....send it to SK Grimes.
Re: Ilex Acme Synchro #3 shutter disassembly
I went as far as wrapping rubber sheet and using large slip joint pliers. Didn't budge.
Didn't know Grimes was still working! I'll look into it.
Thanks!

Re: Ilex Acme Synchro #3 shutter disassembly
Congratulations on surviving. Both cancer and chemo are life altering.
Can't help you with your shutter problem except to say that last time I had a similar problem I took it to a local shop and they didn't seem to have a problem. Are you in SoCal? Steve's Camera Repair is still open, although with shorter days/hours than they once had. They've always done good work on my camera gear.

NorCal
Thanks
It's horrifying... The"treatment", not the cancer. Tried allll the alt methods for 4 years but it kept coming back. Finally opted for the nightmare of RT chemo. Brutal. Still at the beginning of recuperating. Sigh
The lens, I'll give it one more unscrewing try... I mean it's gotta be threaded, right?
